That makes two of us!

But I have a friend who sells security/alarm systems for houses, so I won't elaborate further :o .

And people still use fences, window bars and walls around here so there must be something sneaking around (it's not me, I can't sneak).

For the moment it is indeed remarcable quiet at the criminal front :D .

I never bought a lock for my bicycles (I lived in Amsterdam, where a bicycle with less than three locks would be stolen within five minutes). When I go shopping in the neighbourhood I never lock my house. The alarmsystem of the car is seldom used and my digital camera is visibly lying around in it.

I have hedges around the house and no walls.

I have no big dog, but a little cat.

The only things ever stolen from me in Chiang Rai were:

1) One shoe (by the oversized dog of a fearful farang, who lives close).

2) A certain article of clothing, belonging to the category 'underwear' and at the same time to my former girlfriend (by a mentally retarded assistent-gardener).

But, on behalve of my friend who sells alarmsystems:

"I wouldn't close an eye, if I wouldn't have an alarmsystem: They are everywhere, these desperate drugaddicts, Burmese gangsters and impoverished farang".

Long live Thai culture!

Limbo :o

PS: When again was Goski coming back?

So we don ’ t need to live in a secured muu baan , or on top of a hill , but we need the ( false ) alarm to show of ?

I guess small villages are safe thanks to social control

And asking for a loan from a farang isn ‘ t steeling , is it ?

your girlfriend was stolen by your gardener ?

Dear Flupke,

I think you missed my point, but it doesn't matter :D

Don't forget: The International Mountainbike Challenge of Chiang Rai will be held 10 and 11 February this year. Hope to see you at the start!

And no, asking for a loan from a farang isn't stealing.

It can turn into stealing when he grants it to you and you don't pay back, which sadly enough sometimes is the case.

Be aware of cheating 'farangs'. I am very sorry to say so, but it happens more than once in a while that a 'farang specialist' cashes in on the ignorance of newbies.

This occurs mostly when newcomers think that they can trust other foreigners more than Thai people. This wrong perception cost many people a lot of money and when I say 'a lot' I mean 'a lot'. I am talking about buying houses, land, setting up businesses and so on.

Please, do me (and yourself) a favour and distrust foreigners who talk bad about Thai people and subsequently try to sell you something: They are not sincere! Many times they have a hidden agenda! An agenda which sole purpose is to enrich themselves at the expence of people who trust them.

You are so right Dr Limbo! I am more afraid of farangs than any Thai people.

The only place where I put my wallet in my frontpocket is in Night Bazaar because of all western people there.

And I have also heard about many scams where farangs has been involved in selling land and houses that they doesn't own, to other farangs.

We have a great security system for our house in it's small unsecured Moo Ban in Phayao. A bottle of Whiskey and a police lieutenant living next door, who drinks it...:o My Father and Mother in law are living there while we are in Canada, he is recently retired military, so often the front yard is full of his Military Officer friends from the base that is right across the Highway which is also a great crime deterrent. There has never been a break-in in the area. The only person that ever locks the house is me and even then the back door lock is broken.

Svenivan says, "I have also heard about many scams where farangs has been involved in selling land and houses that they doesn't own, to other farangs. many scams."

Perhaps he could articulate. I heard of one such scam by one unscrupulous farang who has since left C.Rai - but are the 'many scams'?

Personally, I generally trust farang more than ...... (discriminatory remarks removed) ....... It's not an assumption, it's flat-out truth. The pattern is as follows: they get to know you (by working with you or whatever) later on they steal, steal, steal, .....but the unsuspecting farang doesn't suspect them. It's not until a lot later that it's 100% evident.

I've had several distasteful experiences with that pattern. It's not an anamoly. In each instance, up until the time it was crystal clear I'd been ripped off - I was making excuses and vouching for the thieves to anyone who raised doubts.

Brahmburger, as you are involved in real estate business I can understand that you want to neutralize the warning for 'experienced farang' preying on 'ignorant farang'.

To point out that in your opinion local people would be worse than foreigners is not the right way to do so.

Yes, I have heard of scams where farangs been involved selling land to other farangs. In one, a good friend lost quite a good sum of money.

I have been here 5 years and I have not lost anything to Thai people. One time when we had housewarming with +50 farangs and half the village, I lost a beeropener. But I don't know if it that was a farang or a Thai that took it or if it disappeared in the garbage.

I have had 3-6 people working in and around my house for 6-8 months and never lost anything.

And I have many friends and never heard that any of them have a problem with Thai people stealing from them.

Maybe it has something to do with "respect"? If you treat people well and you respect them, then they respect you and treat you well back!

Lived in CR in the mid 90's .. had my house burgled 2 times. One time they ###### near destroyed my front door frame, knocking off a Master padlock.

There was a whole string of burglaries in my neighborhood. They caught the guy from the first one but he wouldn't give up his fence, so I never got my good stuff back.:o((
