I grew up in the US. Just south of Tampa.

Well, no wonder, I spent 14 years in Bradenton, there ain't a decent Philly Cheesesteak in the area.

Here we go again, the "there's only one way to make good XXX and it's how they make it in YYY because that's how it was when I grew up" brigade are having a field day.

In this case the ways they make it at the famous places in Philly is kind of the standard. Similar concept to Chicago Pizza and NYC bagels.

Do you mean the place in soi 81? Or are you talking about your own condo and sandwich?

Certainly, if you had a favorite, and wanted one now, would someone else's opinion of a good one help; especially, if it was not even close? Now, if you are like so many who settle for anything or simply cannot tell the difference, I guess it does not matter.

Mr. N.

Usual rule is that it is tough to duplicate ny pizza outside of NYC.. lived in Philly a while back. They don't put enough meat on the hoagie here. Gotta make it yourself.

Good luck. Hy Lit.

Yeah...and anyone who has ever been to Pat's or Geno's or Jim's in Philly, there is no way to duplicate the ambiance of slathering hot sauce from jars on the counter that have not been cleaned since WW III (Pats) or hearing the guys across the street at Geno's badmouth the "jomokes" over at Pats for using fake cheese, or watching the counter girl at Jim's tell the college kids fresh from Podunk, Iowa that no you cannot get a better cut of meat in your sandwich......just cannot be done.

I have had pretty good Philly Cheese steak sandwiches at Subways in the US. Can't comment on Thai versions.
"Da Boss" and I chat sometimes about what we might do if she ever retires. Really hard to do as actual "planning" seems to be not in the Thai mind set. In three years there have been easily a dozen "plans" that last as much as two months.
I begin to understand, I think, why the idea of financing anything is abhorrent... unless of course for a NEW car, or her daughter's house.
If I cannot hand her 3,000,000 baht cash for something, "No good!".
No good to point out that 75% at least of Thai people cannot do that either.
Anyway, a little coffee shop or restaurant is often thought upon, and a decent Cheese Steak sandwich is one of my menu requirements, for homesick farangs at least.

I suggest Bully's; Suk Soi 4 Nana.

I will have to try that!
I get lost in a Bully's burger, usually. Best I have had in LOS.

There was a fad here awhile back. A few Philly Cheese chain places opened up and closed within a year in Bangkok. They weren't bad, but the side dishes weren't very good and the meat had to be sliced really thin or it would be too tough. The one in Chiang Mai was better, but the owner got busted for selling weed and opium brownies on the side.

Went to the place mentioned in Soi 8 as I was in the area at lunchtime, thought I'd try one of these as the pictures and descriptions looked / sounded OK.  Mistake or what!!!

The picture of the sandwich one the menu looked like many in the first post, quite appetising with a healthy amount of melted cheese on top.  What they served was a load of fried mince beef and with onion but the meat had nowhere near enough of the fat drained off such that some of it was soaking through into the bread.  No cheese on top at and what tasted like a couple of squirts of some almost flavourless cream cheese in the middle.  Overall, pretty awful to such an extent I was sucking mints and whatever for a couple of hours later to get rid of the taste and memory of it.  Should have just binned it really but was starving.  If that's one of the best in BKK I dread to think what the worst is like!!!!

Not sure how these things are supposed to be made but if it is with minced beef I'd have at least really pressed the fat out of it then fried it off some more to dry it out and caramelise it for some flavour.  As it is the menu description should be: A greasy minced beef and onion sandwich with  squirt of cheese paste.

Never again!!!
