Eighty-four pangolins, believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar, were seized in the border town of Mae Sot of Tak province on Friday (Nov 24), said Mae Sot customs chief Wanlop Wuthapanich.

Mr Wanlop said the seizure was made in a joint operation of customs officials, a military unit and officials from the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department in a search of the cargo terminal by the Moei River at Ban Tha-art in Tambon Tha Sai Luat of Mae Sot district.

The smugglers fled while the authorities were arriving at the cargo terminal, leaving behind the 84 pangolins, worth about 1 million baht.

The death penalty should apply to anyone involved in trafficking endangered animals.
