Another round of  broken things

kickstart return spring broke again after just  a few days  think the cause was the "retainer" thingy had fractured and distorted allowing too much spring travel... local father and son shack had the parts from an old engine..

1265908346_springretainerP_20190723_131446.thumb.jpg.8a69b6b8d19b21a7d4b8ffa02c48ca7d.jpg

all back together again great  go out for a "test drive" out on Sukhumvit road  missed a gear and the revs went into the red

then the rev counter stopped working..oh great I though, the cables broken..but as I got near home the engine temperature almost went into the red uh ooh what now ?

well the water pump/tachometer drive gear had shattered !

P_20190723_150458.thumb.jpg.6abeb0e2e92f47f6fd4385ecf99bb537.jpg

should have been attached to this shaft.

P_20190723_151651.thumb.jpg.6b13bfa8d38f7bf70c07d7ee99b06893.jpg

Amazingly found the shaft with gear moulded into place on "Shopee  Thailand"  online website there was also some other bits I wanted like turn signal indicators ,windshield and a sticker/decal kit..great.

P_20190801_155547.thumb.jpg.0d9e16fe8749ce5e1a19ed941feb3cf5.jpg

ok all back together again..its time for my 90 day report at immigration...I should have trusted my "sixth sense"  but told  the bike under my breath..don't let me down today.... guess what ? yes it did ????  stuck out side the immigration office..had to find a local repair shop  not too far away..he came and gave me a push with his foot back to his workshop about 1 km away

he diagnosed a bad battery,I didn't believe it at first as the battery is not needed for it to run, but the spark plug had no spark.

He changed the battery and spark plug as mine was ancient anyway then it sprung back to life...the battery had an internal short resulting in no spark at the plug.

Drove back home "happy as Larry"  parked up and noticed the radiator is leaking again !!!   doooohhhhhhhhh ????

I think it needs "The exorcist"

24 years I'd say you certainly got your moneys worth. As you and many have said you get what you pay for. Good luck in the interim. I'd hate to see such a fine piece or work out of commission for too long . Here's to the next 24 yrs.

Made some enquiries, contacted the main suspension people in TH, BDS Performance in BKK, searched and  studied on the interweb to no avail.

No diagrams, no tutorials, nuffink.

Factory rebuild ONLY.

Let the remaining air out (run at 9 bar or 145psi stock ! ! !), and got them a bit apart, before realizing, i don't have the special tools, i'm out of my depth (custom internal engraving on parts...) and i'm not gonna f##k a pair of 800$ shocks up.

Via a UK distributor, inc return shipping to and fro from the factory in Toulouse, France = 230GBP, rebuild inc new seals and oil, is 230GBP inc 12 month warranty.

Not too shabby i thought.

I can handle that every 24 years....

Will be in my suitcase on my next visit, meantime, purchasing some cheap & nasty things to tide me over, 71 quid inc vat and P&P to a UK address....... :ninja:

No pics.

The wife's Rat-Wave has had a sticky non fully returning caliper/pistons for a while now.

Sometimes to the point of being hard to push.

So i went to my favourite corner shop parts distributor to buy a seal and piston kit.

It needed new pistons because the sticky outy visible part actually had rust on it.

No hab.

Have seals, but new pistons are not a part number.

Contemplated making  new alloy ones on the lathe. Briefly.

Then parts counter man says why don't you just buy the genuine new complete caliper with new pads everything, like everybody else does?

Nobody repairs these things.

Oh, ok, how much?

500 Baht......

The wife's Rat-Wave has a shiny new front caliper on it.

Stands out a bit. Amongst the corroded alloy, cracked plastics, muck and grime.

Gotta love this country.

Most people will simply a complete caliper as they dont know how to re-build one.Just as long as you dont become a "fitter" .  ????????

Ha Ha. You must be from England.  For those who dont know , Quick Fit is a chain of tire/exhaust centers . Totally incompetent bunch of crooks , to be avoided at all costs.   IMO.

What did I do to my bike today well I have checked through this bike not just today but everyday for 2 month or more OK as said before got this old bike I'm still kinda happy because it was a bike I had in UK so kinda chuffed really. as posted before I came by the bike by way of Thaivisa, and after intensive surgery I have brought it back to life and can get it up and running in a very patch up Thai way.

Still got to get the book in my wifes name so now it's going sort of, DLT next for re-register and pay back taxes etc etc.

You are getting your Dots mixed up.

Dot 3 & 4 are compatible, sold pretty much everywhere and fitted to 98% of vehicles.

Dot 5 is used in Harleys only on motorcycles, and some French cars i believe.

Hence it is, indeed, difficult to find (HD shops sell it).

You DO NOT want to mix 5 & 4 in the same system.

I am 99.9% sure Honda would have specified Dot 4 for your bike, which is available in every auto factors or m/c shop. I use Shell Dot 4, 500ml, 110 Baht.

Since DOT 4 and 5.1 are both glycol-based brake fluids they are compatible with each other, which means they can be readily mixed without harming your brake system. It is important never to mistake DOT 5.1 (glycol-based) with DOT 5 which is silicone-based and should never be mixed with any other DOT fluid.

Yeah up north here still trying to rid of stocks dot 3 ???? at Shell at 130, found one Motul dot 4 @ 200 probably the name for price.

My thoughts were interest along the lines of humidity in Thailand and dot 5 doesn't absorb water the same as as other dots available, my remark was probably OTT thats all.

46 minutes ago, Kwasaki said:

???? Yeah OK knew that but dot 5 is silicon and does not absorb water in humid climates that was my interest.

Whole new world of pain though dude.

Different seals, o rings, everything dude.

Stick to Dot 3/4 and change it every coupla years.

In fact both my road bikes - cannot remember the last time i changed it - 3-4 years ago?

Toyota Vigo - 12 y/o - never changed it.

No biggie.

Any vehicle with ABS needs brake fluid cycled on a regular basis - make brake application hard enuf that the ABS kicks in. This replaces the small amount of fluid in the modulator, servos, etc. with clean fresh fluid. If left, and it contains moisture, corrosion can result.

And change every 2 years.

If no air has entered the system upstream of the modulator, bleeding can be performed in the same way as conventional brakes.

If components have been replaced, specialized equipment may be required to cycle the module to remove air.

A vehicle without ABS brake fluid will last 14 years like in my dual breaking Airblade scoot. ????

Looks like you got rust in the petrol tank...I had rust too and it kept blocking the pilot jet and stopping the needle valve from sealing properly...so the carb kept flooding petrol all over the place [emoji30]

Ebay not available where you live?

"What Did You Do to Your Bike Today ?"

Not being in Loei in years, I did what I usually do late at night.  I ride around the town on my bike in my mind.  Very low maintenance.

My bro-in-law had a mocy  shop in Loei years back, then went to Khon Kaen.  I got him & family to the USA and now he's my car mechanic. Can't beat free.

Not my engine, but he makes a few bucks fixing other people's cars.  He's amazingly good at diagnosing simple problems.  He's not afraid of a parking lot rebuild.  His day job is a chef at a Thai restaurant.

Funny thing... every time he comes to my house to fix my car or mow the lawn or move furniture, he will always Wai me respectfully.  Good "kid".  I've known him for 40+ years.
