SATTAHIP:--A manhunt is on for the driver of a Sattahip baht bus who, while fighting with his wife, crashed his overloaded taxi, killing five passengers and injuring nine others.

Among the dead in the Nov. 18 accident at the 164th-kilometer marker on Sukhumvit Road were 15-year-olds Maneerath Sridaowrueng and Natda Pandit. Maneerath, an electronics student at Sattahip College, was laid to rest in a somber ceremony at Samakeebanpot Temple Nov. 20.

The girl’s mother, Julee Sridaowrueng, 46, begged for driver Somporn Thamaen, 35, to turn himself in. An arrest warrant has been issued.

Also confirmed dead in the crash were Supansa Sonhun, 36; Pornpimol Nakasem, 55, and Nappatch Kongsieng, 30.

On Nov. 24, Sureeporn Weerabawornkul, director of the Office of Insurance Commission Area 9, and Taweesak Khunopat, manager of Asia Insurance Co., presented families of the five killed in the crash with 300,000 baht each in compensation.

Fifteen people were packed into the back of the Naklua-Sattahip pickup truck when it barreled into a large Pradhu tree around 2:30 p.m. The roof of the cab was torn off and the passenger bay destroyed, with bodies scattered all around the wrecked baht bus.

Five died at the scene.  I attended the funeral of the TENTH! victim on Wednesday.

I've lived in this area for 11 years and there's been fatalities almost monthly.  There's talk of erecting a radar camera to deter drivers from speeding down the hill to beat the lights at Bang Saray.  Talk is cheap meanwhile watch this space........

That's the worse baht bus accident I've ever heard of locally. I recall another fatality accident a while back near Dolphin Circle though. But not so many dead.

Your right it hits close to home. I try to do an over nighter in Ban Chang ever month. If a van doesn't stop on Suk in say 15 mins I'll take one of these songthauw to Sattihip then a  ฿100 motorbike taxi the rest of the way. They do a lot of stop and go just like the vans and I have always felt safe. When school gets out I've seen these absolutely jammed with kids. The thing is how do you prevent a. madman from doing this.

Easy to stop the overloading, Police stop buses with children on, if the loading was say 16 children, then fine the driver 2000 baht for every child over that number and arrange for another empty bus to pick up the children. Most of these buses are owned by a consortium then as the financial cost of defying the law becomes too much stupid drivers will either stop doing it or abide by the law. Hit them where it hurts in their pockets.; Plus if an accident occure the insurance refuse to pay for injures for more people that the bus is licensed to carry. Not rocket sc ience but I have never YET seen a Baht bus stopped by police for overloading yet in  15 years.

The most simplest disagreement leads to an outbursts of unbelievable anger  leading to tragedies such as this one. I see it and we witness it everyday, LOS is a land of lunatics it seems. RIP

When I was driving tour buses, it was always on my mind to respect passengers safety and drive extra carefully at all times.

A trait sadly, rarely  found in Thai drivers.

RIP those loved ones

As I have said the regime never bothered with legitimate law reforms. The problem in Thailand is the existing police force. It's a absolute international joke. People's lives are put at risk due to there refusal to enforce common sense laws. What type of law allows people to be hanging out of a packed full Ute lol.

The Lunatics are truly running the Asylum.

Just another day here on Thailands roads......no-one in authority really cares :sorry:

Oh, I think they care, just don't DO anything about it - something in their brains will turn this catastrophe into something justified like,  "the driver was distracted by an arguing wife, accident is not his fault"  1000 baht fine for leaving the scene of an accident.:post-4641-1156694606::shock1:

Absolutely horrific. Too often life here is so cheap. This is just run of the mill, repeated daily somewhere in Thailand.

I see this comment "life here is so cheap" many times on here and in my experience it is absolute and utter rubbish.

I consider myself one of life's observers.....and from what I see Thai Mothers and Fathers adore their children every bit as much as parents in the USA or Europe  or any place else in the world. Go into any  restaurant in any shopping mall and quit talking and start looking around you. Parents "doteing" on their beautiful children...In places like KFC, MK, Swensons, etc.,

How dare anybody say "life is cheap" in Thailand
