After 100 die on Najomtien roads, police pull out radar guns

image.png

SATTAHIP: Najomtien Police have set up speed traps and pulled radar guns following 100 traffic-related deaths in the Sattahip sub-district this year.

Pol. Maj. Somporn Sumart and Pol. Capt. Chatchai Sripalang were seen hiding in the bushes near Nong Nooch Tropical Garden on Sukhumvit Road, aiming radar guns to catch speeders.

In one hour, they caught 37 motorists speeding and many motorcyclists without helmets or licenses.

Sompron said that stretch of road alone had claimed 100 lives over the past two years with the most recent tragedy coming Nov. 18 when a distracted baht bus driver crashed into a tree killing five passengers and injuring nine others.

With Thailand last month gaining the dubious honor of having the world’s deadliest roads, police say they need to step up enforcement of speed limits to mitigate the carnage.

finally a smart approach to rooting out the reasons of most accidents.  Stick to it and do these checks every other day until Thailand's roads are safe.

Yet, there's one objection I would like to utter.  Seing the picture reminds me on HOW HOT it is out there.

I hope they issue daytime heat & sunshine fit police gear for those involved, as going clad in the brown poly-crap uniforms plus helmet won't make them last the heat for long.  Allow police to wear light gear, summer cotton shirts and light trousers and some light headgear to shade the face, and they will begin to love their jobs out chasing traffic law violators

It often makes me wonder if not their unfit thick and uncomfortable clothes are the main reason why police rarely is seen in the open doing the job police in other countries are supposed to do. Maybe it is because it is actually way too hot in these garments

This will be strictly a 10:45 - 11:15 am occupation. Not long enough for heat stroke.

You are possibly being too logical. No need for logic here. The goal is to get the cash in and make it look as if you are doing the right thing.

I would hope they will have the effect they intend to have, adding a demerit point system for licences would be great, and hopefully they stop allowing people driving without licence plates so as to know where to send the fines 555

 same happend in france

Totally agree, plus No helmet - 2,500 baht; no driver's licence - 5,000 baht & confiscate the bike/vehicle until license is produced; More than 2 on the bike - 3,000 baht; DUI - 10,000 baht, etc etc. Yes, people will complain, but at least roads will be safer.

France is not a good example. It is impossible to drive here anymore. There are automatic radars everywhere, and they are disposed mostly to make money.

I drove in several countries (included Thailand) and I never had an accident in my life. Here in France I see more and more limitations coming annoying my driving, taking my money, and making all my commuting taking longer. Road death tolls are listed around the 30th or 40th highest reason of death in this country only. But they became huge source of revenue for governments.

I'm not sure you want that in Thailand.

as long as you drive within the rules and laws you wont have any problems, i've been driving 30 plus years and never paid penny in fines, and to be honest anything is better than the carnage and horrendous death and injury toll on the roads here

Yeah, I'm sure that will stop the speeding.  :whistling:  <not>

"Oh look teerak, you got a 400 THB fine for speeding last week!"
"Mai bpen rai.  It's the price of getting where you want to go quickly!"

Real deterrence starts with large fines, increased insurance rates, and a point system where you first lose your license and then your vehicle, plus getting tossed into jail if caught more than once driving without a license.  And nothing slows down traffic in the West like a highway patrol car with all it's lights flashing.  A small fine via the mail really is just part of the cost of driving in whatever manner suits you, regardless of how dangerous it may be.

Not to worry, give it a few years and you won't have to drive at all, Mr Android will do the job for you.

whenever ive wondered why police dont routinely use speed guns and fine speeders or at least extort pricier bribes and also discourage speeding through more expensive bribes i realize simply because they are too lazy to use the devices and may have to actually pursue speeders to stop them.  way too much work when they can just setup a cash and carry checkpoint.

Most of you guys are really bloody pathetic!! It is no the speeding it is the lack of education on how to drive!! You can get a licence here so easy. Even with the new stupid test it is not funny!! No common courtesy for a start!!! Ludicrous the attitude of the average driver!! EDUCATION not revenue raising!!!

If you want to pay those fines go back to the US or the UK

I've been saying that forever.

Their uniforms now are just solar panels with buttons & zippers.

In Thailand having a license doesn't mean you can drive. Far from it.

Stupid, no more accidents in France. There are a lot of reasons like rude behaviour, overloading of Pickups, motorcyclists without helmet or those who do not care about cars comming the main road etc. But these real problems are much more difficult to fine. So in the end it is the easy fine that moves such activities. In Germany there is unlimited speed and much less accidents. I am not recommending that for Thailand but solve the real problems.

It’s hard work out there.... no power, low energy... so being creative, and recognizing that they needed an extra power supply, (above and beyond Red Bull) they installed carry on solar panels... ingenious thailand 4.0
