How Bangkok plans to tackle traffic jams

Interview with Dr Supachai Tantikom, Bangkok Chief Resilience Officer.

By Medha Basu

Bangkok needs to “break the cycle of reacting to problems”, says Dr Supachai Tantikom.

Tantikom is Chief Resilience Officer of Bangkok, advising the city’s Governor on how to prepare for future challenges. The city has seen “unprecedented change” in the last decade, he says, becoming a major centre of commerce and culture in Asia. It has brought about massive migration of people from surrounding areas of Thailand to the city.

But the development has “not been universal”. It has created congested streets, poor air quality, frequent flooding and stressful lifestyles. “Our natural environment and the health of our residents have suffered with the expanding development,” Tantikom says. Bangkok needs to “set out a more deliberate course to ensure our city is resilient”, he adds.

lets see, they encouraged private car ownership just a few years back and now they want people to park them.

Why don't they make some plastic signs with a slogan on and have some high-up police general exclaim he'll eradicate heavy congestion within 30 days. Add in a nice prawn dinner followed by a photo shoot and you're on to a winner. Works every time.

You need a lot of resilience if you job is to advise on planning for problems.

100's of clean busses parked at the port while the city is full of shitters spitting out toxic fumes day after day.

Just a little hint Dr Supachai Tantikom.   if you are serious about the air quality. Might not change a lot but every journey starts with a first step.

I think the first thing they need to do is form a committee.....then mull the results of meetings.

The only way to tackle the traffic is to make everyone pass a proper driving test before tax and insurance is renewed. That would get rid of 80 percent of the traffic at a stroke.

Sorry to contradict your reference above.  Your "quote" is taken from a Chinese philosopher and is incorrect.  In fact, every journey actually starts with the first thought of that journey.and I have had many debates and discussions about this and have never lost.

Except I wasn't quoting anybody. Carry on being  a snob :)

The good doctor should be cognizant of global warming as he is adding copious amount of warm CO2 to the atmosphere.
