BTS wants fare adjustment when “spider” tickets come into force

BTS Group Holding Company chairman Khiri Kanchanapas has suggested an adjustment of mass transit fares now that “spider” tickets will soon come into force which will allow commuters to travel in all mass transit systems using just one ticket.

He pointed out that while the “spider” tickets will provide more convenience to the commuters, operators of the mass transit systems, including the BTS Group Holding which operates the BTS skytrain, will have to bear more maintenance costs from the expansion of services and increasing number of commuters.

He cited for an example that if the starting fare of using all mass transit systems is one baht and when a commuter is charged one baht fare for the first ride in a system and then he connects to another system for the second ride without being charged “then how can the operators survive when there are more routes and more passengers while the operators’ revenue remain unchanged.”

Surely that isn't how the system will work and commuters will still have to pass the electronic barriers at the entrance to the stations.

I could imagine the system can deduct money from the card as it does now, but that the same card can be used on all transport systems.

Will the fare adjustment BTS seeks include offering the 50 percent senior discount that MRT gives to all, and not only to Thais like the BTS now operates? Will it snow in Bangkok at Christmas?

They should have all the elevators that were court ordered finished and repairs of installed elevators that have broken,- like the ground to first level Rajadamri elevator (broken.for at.least 7 months now) before requesting any price changes.

exactly. as similar systems work in other countries (everything happens behind the scenes and passengers simply swipe their card at the barrier/getting on the bus), but as you know other countries not understand thailand. :crying:

The BTS chairman's remarks are as ignorant a remark as I have ever heard. He is complaining that since he will have more customers he will have to actually accommodate them. How about adding some more trains to reduce the current overcrowding; fixing the elevators and adding escalators for the elderly and the infirm. How about letting foreigners over age 60 obtain a discount the same as the MRT.

You don't need a fare increase- the added customers will bring in more revenue.

And also change the station-names....Asok=Sukhumvit...Mochit=Chatuchak park....Silom = Sala Daeng......who makes stupid plans like that???

After 15 years in BKK i just learned that these stations are the same...(i never used the metro before though).

Well, it seems that our illustrious leader "Doesn't care" if operators don't implement Mangmoom (Spider).

From here https://www.matichon.co.th/news/772563 via Google Translate (which for once seems to have done a reasonable job) "Pointers who complain of high cost spider cards do not come to the contract with the state. People do not have to do."

So, effectively that could mean the kiss of death for Mangmoom, none of the operators will implement if they don't have to. But then there's Article 44 ...

Change station names because you can't work it out on such a basic system like this? How do you manage in cities that have proper networks?

Cities with proper networks have the same station name for different lines and transport types.
