The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand reported that the ground-level temperature hit negative 5 degrees Celsius at its observatory in the Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai on Thursday morning.

The institute reported on Facebook that officials at the observatory at the kilometre maker 44.4 in the park used a digital thermometer to measure the temperature at ground level in front of the observatory and found that the temperature dropped to negative 5C.

The institute said the area was also covered by frost.

A spokeswoman of the institute, Piriyaporn Sappasri, confirmed that the officials of the observatory recorded the minus 5C temperature, which was unprecedented.

She said the officials measured the temperature at 6.30am and took photos of frost to post on Facebook.

Wear your woollies, stay warm.

Recognized measurements are always made at 10 meters. Still amazingly cold for Thailand. What I’m waiting to hear is that there’s snow on Phou Bia in Laos. Supposedly hasn’t been observed since the 1920’s. Nothing reported that I can find.

-5 that could cause water pipes to freeze and maybe burst if it is prolonged. If gets that cold open a tap for trickle of water to prevent it.

We were at the summit at 07:00 this morning and it was a balmy 10 degrees.  Amazingly, one degree warmer than it was at our hotel  (at 400m) when we left it an hour before

The Thais will be burning everything in sight. Goodbye sphagnum moss bog.

Been there, done that once, then told my Thai family never to take me anywhere that cold

again without warning me and giving me warm enough clothes to wear. I do not go with them

any more when there are in Chiang Mai and say they are headed for the hills.

I relax and have a brew at the pool until they return. They are happy that they seen their

temples and I am happy that I stayed warm.

Geezer

Negative 5 ! What ever happened to minus 5.  By April it will be positve 25 I guess.
