I've read as many stories about both airports - though at one time Suv was considered better.  The only airport I've not seen TR/ED-Visa trouble-reports from is Chang Mai, but that is based on who reports to this site.

The NokAir fly-ride solution would avoid any potential troubles.

Yes, right now looks like Nok Air is the best option

If you use the NokAir fly-ride service

  • you cross the border by land, so you do not need to pass immigration at the airport; and
  • it means one night less in Savannakhet: you receive your passport back with visa too late to fly out of Savannakhet the same day, but with plenty of time to take a Fly-Ride journey.

About the visa,

everyone keeps telling me that it takes 1 one day to get it but on the Thai embassy in Vientiane website, it says it takes 2 days to proceed...

I’m having doubts about the whole process.. how many days in Vientiane should I book?

The Consular Section of the Royal Thai Embassy in Vientiane is open from Monday to Friday. Visa application form could be submitted from 8.30-11.30 hours only. The Process will take TWOworking days, visa applicants will receive their passport back in the afternoon of the following working day. Passport collection time is from 13.30-15.30 hours.

maybe my English’s too bad to understand.

They say 2 days but you can get your passport back on the following working day...

so it’s 1 day procedure right?

The 2 days is the day you do the application and the day you pick it up.

Apply the morning of of one day and pick up the next afternoon.

Hi everyone,

I’m coming back with some news and questions, hoping that some of you have answers..

I just got the approval from the MOE, so here is my plan for Vientiane :

(I’m not taking the fly n ride service of Nokair, I checked the hours and it’s not convenient for me, I’ll only take a flight from bkk to Udon Thani)

12th Feb : GO

13th Feb : RETURN

Flight Bangkok -> Udon Thani

(early morning arriving around 7am)

Udon Thani -> Friendship bridge (I know it’s 1 hour drive, I’ll take any van/bus/taxi this is not a problem)

So I guess I’ll be done with all the route and the immigration around 9:30 or 10 am?

Then a member of my family will be waiting for me at Nong Khai to directly go to the Thai Embassy in Vientiane (30mins drive)

I do know that the Thai embassy closes at 11:30 am, I think I could stick to that program if there’s no delay.

Some of you will tell me to stay longer in Vientiane to avoid any trouble, but as I’m French/Lao, I already know the country, I don’t like it, and Vientiane is terribly boring and unattractive. 1 night is enough for me...

So, if some of you have already traveled on their own from Udon to Vientiane, know about the timing/hours or have any advice I’m listening :)

Thank you!

Everything sounds good to me. I was there a couple of weeks ago and got my ED visa. I took the overnight train from Bangkok to Nong Khai, though I've done the flight-to-Udon path a few times in the past. You'll find the "van desk" just to the right of the exit at the airport, if they haven't switched things around. Have a nice trip

I'm looking for some help regarding travel from Udon Thani airport to Vientiane, after flying in with Nok Air.

There are vans from the airport to the bridge at Nong Khai. There are shuttle buses to take you across the bridge after stamping out of Thailand. After stamping into Laos, it is easiest to take a taxi unless you have a lot of time and like wrestling with local transport.

Hi Masuk,

dont know when you’re travelling but if you plan on going later on February I’ll post a message to say how it went for me.

Hi everyone,

So I’m back in Bangkok.

I made my way from Udon to Nong Khai which was quite easy :

I arrived at 7am at Udon Thani airport, got out of the airplane 2mins later, got my suitcase really fast, I just walked like I was getting out of the airport and found a counter

« Limousine » there I took a ticket for a van (200b) that is taking me from the airport to the border.

It was a nice van, air conditionner,

6 passengers, 2 drivers.

We left once it was full.

(We left around 7:25am)

1 hour drive later I was at the border,

Thai side, nothing much, stamped out.

Just walked and saw another counter selling bus ticket (20b) to cross the bridge. (5mins ride)

I arrived at the Lao side (8:15),

filled the immigration form, gave it to the counter with the visa fee, got it back 7mins later.

Dont forget to bring a photo and dollars.

It was 8:40 when everything was done, got out and there were many taxis waiting, 1000b to go to downtown Vientiane. But i didn’t take it my uncle was waiting for me.

We arrived at the Thai Embassy after a 35mins ride. Had time to make everything, got my ticket, just had to come back the next day.

The next day

I arrived at the opening hour 13:30, but my ticket number was 501... so it took me more than 2 hours to get my passport back...

It can go very fast, as it can suddenly slow down when some people don’t get their visa, and keep

discussing/negociating with the officers...

*be careful when you book your flight tickets.

Make sure you have enough time, possibly add more 1 hour in case there’s any problem.

Picked up my passport, paid 2000b.

I crossed the bridge by car with my uncle who’s Lao.

It probably made things a lot easier.

At the Lao immigration we didn’t have to queue with the other tourists, same thing on the Thai side, and the IO was busy talking everyday life with my uncle, he didn’t say a word about my passport, just stamped everything.

Made it to Udon Thani airport in 45mins.

so everything went well for me, im probably not the best example because of the help I got from my family but my story can always help.

Thanks to everyone answering me this whole time. :)
