Bangkok plays host to the ECC Thailand Open Crossword Puzzle Championships at the Fashion Island shopping center in Minburi.

The annual event – now in its ninth year - is to be held in the northern Bangkok shopping center on 27th and 28th January starting at 9am.

The event is open to all and is all in English. It is sponsored by language school ECC.

Former three time champion Gerry Carter, a resident of Bangkok, said: “This is a great event and would give any crossword puzzle enthusiast a fun weekend”.

There are cash prizes and trophies for the first three in the competition.

After three preliminary rounds against the clock on tournament tables the first five based on a points system are chosen to face off on the stage on giant crossword grids in the final.

While the Crosswords in the preliminary event are not that hard, speed is of the essence. The final is traditionally harder and themed and is also against the clock.

Competitors should register for the event at the venue by 8.30 am on Saturday.

Two rounds are held on Saturday and two including the final the next day. Entry is usually around 300 baht per adult.

There are also adult and student competitions in Thai and English Scrabble going on at the same venue along with a host of other games for children to enjoy.

Meanwhile the Scrabble circuit moves on to Khon Kaen this weekend with the North Eastern Thai Championships. The event will be held Saturday and Sunday 20/21st January at the Central Plaza shopping center.

Entrants for English language Scrabble are welcome for the two day tournament.

Two weeks ago Chiang Mai doctor Jakkrit Klaphajone won his hometown tournament at Central Airport Plaza, the first event of the Scrabble calendar in 2018.

Competitive Scrabble is played by thousands of students and adults in Thailand and is sponsored by big business, the Department of Education the Thai Royal Family.
