Bangkok resident Gerry Carter, originally from London, pipped a Thai rival to win the National Crossword Puzzle Championship in the Fashion Island department store on Sunday.

The ninth edition of the event - sponsored by nationwide language school ECC - attracted a large crowd of shoppers to the northern Bangkok store as thousands of children competed in student divisions of crossword puzzles in Thai and English, Scrabble in both languages, Sudoku and other maths games.

Gerry, 56, who has lived in the capital for 35 years and is a Thai resident, beat out his younger Thai rival Tawan Sunathvanichkul from Khon Kaen who was the reigning champion.

In third was Christopher Rudd from Workington in England. Chris is an English teacher in Korat and new to the crossword gaming and Scrabble scene in Thailand that attracts thousands to nationwide tournaments sponsored by big business.

Gerry won a first prize totalling 30,000 baht in cash and bursaries. The prize is taxed at 5% by the government.

He said: "I did not finish the puzzle this year but I made far fewer mistakes than my rivals. None of us knew SCONCES (a plural of a kind of light fixture for candles) and I didn't know that Bitcoin was sold on something called Block Chain. I might have done if I had ever bought any!

"And because I made a mistake with REMORSE I failed to find BLUEPRINTED".

Gerry - a former international school teacher in Don Meuang - was winning the title for the fourth time.

The event was organised by the Thailand Crossword Game Club who are among the leading organizers of Scrabble and related games in the world.
