Hi all

I am in need of some advise, my common sense tells me i need to update my families medical plan .

Thing is im finding it all a little or a Lot confusing, have been talking to bupa lately and just cant seem to find what i need .

we are a family of two young children 3/10 yrs and two adults.

hoping someone out there has been through all this and has some advise for us please.

As an expat its obvious i need medical insurance, but also need to cover the family  as well, should i have an insurance policy with a thai company should i use something like bupa ,really need some advise on this one ,dont want to leave us open to problems later.

thanks in advance.

You did not say but believe wife and children are Thai nationality and thus covered by normal free/30 baht medical coverage?  And you want private hospital/doctor coverage for everyone?

You should engage an agent to look at various companies and offerings and select what makes sense. A broker I have used is Pacific Prime.

Please clarify the nationality of your wife and children.

If they are Thai they are already covered under the national health scheme. And if despite that you want private cover for them, there are options not open to expats.

Also please advise:

- your age

- whether any pre-existing conditions

- how long you expect to be in Thailand (important as some insurers offer lifetime cover and some stop coverage when you reach a certain age)

- whether you are employed - if so,m you should be covered under Thai Social Security unless it is at a private school

Family is thai and yes covered by the 30 baht system, although this is sometimes lacking it is a good system for thais.

myself am 59  no pre existing other than diabetic, and are still working in australia  month on month off.

although i started looking for myself only , as i dont wish to be the typical expat that has no coverage , i would be interested in full family coverage if i could find a reasonable cover.

I have looked at bupa and find it just costly and without very good coverage really.

Im thinking that i will end up having to cover just myself and have family on the thai 30 baht system for now.

That is best. Because Thailand has universal health cover the market for health insurance for Thais is quite small and prices high.

Being diabetic will be a constraint for you. I suggest you try Cigna Glibal as they tend to be more reasonable about pre-existing conditions. But there will still likely be some exclusions.

If intermittent work in Australia is likely to continue you might want to considet short term travel insurance for the periods in Thailand.
