Certainly a more inspired choice than the all too inexperienced Arteta.  Whatever pans out here it would appear the new manager will have little or no autonomy in the transfer market.

Never bothered Emery at Sevilla where Monchi ran all the transfer dealings.

Which would go along way to explaining why this wasn't a stumbling block.

I think he's got quite a rebuild on his hands baring in mind their aspirations.

One top goalkeeper, a couple of strong centerbacks and a worldclass CAM. The rest is workable. Easier said than done!

Good appointment.

Decent choice by the Hammers too (Pellegrini), avoiding that sad bottom-feeding vulture-bunch of Pardew, Moyes, Sam, Pulis and Hughes (most of whom they have already been thru anyway).

How many world-class proven managers are there now left outside the Premier League? Allegri and Simeone come to mind but not may more?

Be good to see what he can do. I think a half decent manager can get more out of arsenal than arsene could the last couple of seasons. That time to go debacle weighed the team down. Hopefully he let's the dramatic wilshere go and gets Ramsey fitter than ever.

I like Wilshire's playing style. Whatever he says in response to Southgate's supposed snub, his performances did fade at the back end of the season but he put some commanding stints in in the first two-thirds, many of which were in the Europa but some in the Prem too. In my book he's worth another shout next season and would be expected to lead the Europa League team, so I'm pleased he looks likely to extend his contract (presumably subject to the new boss agreeing - or maybe it's Gazidis' decision, in which case it's done). Has shown a bit more maturity last season - god knows that wasn't difficult to achieve!

Sorry Santi but you also need a top drawer defensive mid.

If they continue with the policy of one marquee signing a window they will be right by 2025.

Fellaini to sign with the Gunners ?!

Not an Arsene type.

Read an article the other day (forget where) that Arsenal's new recruitment team are ex Dortmund and that seems to be where new faces are coming from: Aubegmayang, Mykytarian, the young centre back that got a couple of games back end of last year and proposed newcomer at centre back Papadontpreachopdopolous.

Truly disastrous! Might as well be owned by a loan shark. Knows nothing about football. He's a sharp financier and has probably spotted that the only clubs that make mega money out of football are the ones who spend big and, critically, are already at the very top of the tree. Getting there by splashing out is unlikely to put you there  ...  or at least is a high risk strategy, financially.

So, doing just about enough to keep in all the competitions (already downgraded to Europa not CL) and adding a dose of making money on cute buying/selling and the academy is the likely prescription. I give Emery 2 seasons at most before he goes somewhere else out of frustration - can't see him being a wingman for Kroenke's financial prudence a la Wenger.

Spot on Carmine - was quite looking forward to the season until that news came out. Unfortunately no died-in-the-wool Spurs-hating fans remain on this thread for you to wreak well-earned revenge on :-)

There does seem a lot of disheartenment about this. Although I think they might suprise us on the park this season.

We'll still be an attractive team to watch .... as long as Aubamayang stays fit and injury free. Could be lots of high scoring games (both ways), particularly in the first few weeks, until Monreal or Kalashnikov regain fitness. A few of the talented youngsters might surprise too. You're right BB - a few good results could remove the pervading gloom.

We tune out the bleating of sheep at the Lane.

Some great strengthening this season and a great forward line with lacazette and aubeymang. Expect Arsenal to be a lot closer than last 10 years this season.

Why not, City are a much stronger and settled side.  They have also strengthen with a proven midfielder.  Arsenal on the other hand will need time to show their best form.

It might go well for Arsenal, who knows but theres not a lot to suggest anything other than a City win

Arsenal's back line is in tatters at the moment. Could be a few goals scored tonight.
