Russian cuisine - need help finding a specific meal

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to find a specific Russian (I think) dish. If you know where they sell it or some restaurant that could take a specific order I'd be very thankful.

Please save yourself the trouble if you're going to just name random Russian restaurants that could maybe have the dish just because they're Russian.

The dish is a type of dumpling, the name could be Vareniki, Pelmeni or Pierogi. The one I'm looking for is filled with potato and cheese, with a tad of paprika and most importantly the sauce that comes with it is a delicious mixture that includes caramelised onions and bacon.

I've already tried the Russian market in Phratamnak Soi 6 and the restaurant 8 horseshoes and they don't have this one. I am not looking for the boring pale dumpling with just potato inside and a white cream for a sauce. I want the tasty one.

This is the photo that best represents the version I'm looking for:

Good luck with that.

I've certainly never seen that on a Russian menu here.If I were you, I would try to get a place to make it for you as a custom dish, ordered in advance.

I think Ukraine Restaurant has all the ingredients.

They do orders in advance for some of their menu items so it wouldn't be that weird to ask them.

You can the food you mention in A, Russian Restaurant on the 5the Floor of Central festival. In general many of the restaurants around cozy beach do the very common dishes you mention.  Dome you can buy pre prepared in in Supermarkets such as foodmart near Threppasit.  There are also numerous restaurants selling the food you mention on the Soi that connects Thaypraya to The Pattaya Park tower including Ukrainian restaurants.

The specific dish preparation he's asking for is not easy to find here. You're thinking about the standard preparation of the dumplings, which yes would be available at most any Russian restaurant.

They are very popular in the neck of the woods I come from. The best are sold from Ukrainian churches which put out a ton of them every week. I've had my eyes open looking for them in Pattaya or BKK for years but have yet to come across a single Perogey. I think I'll just make my own. They are terrific deep fried with fried onion, bacon bits and sour creàm. Let us know if you find any please.

Perogey or Perogies and Bilinis can be found in the Russian restaurant in Central Festival and plenty of other places where the Russian and Ukrainian communities eat.

Have you checked them?

Not all of them, no.

He's asking for a specific lead on a specific, hard to find, dish.

You haven't provided that.

I haven't either but I do think that the restaurant I mentioned MIGHT be able to do the dish on special order.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies, I'll give it a try at the Ukranian restaurant first. If that fails I'll check the one at Central.

If I find it I'll let you know.

Yes, pierogi's are Ukrainian and different from bland, Russian dumplings. I only ever had them once (and I ate a load of them)... at an Orthodox church festival in Saskatoon!

Do post if you find anything that comes close in Pattaya.

Excuse me but the OP was clear. He wasn't only looking for basic versions of these pasta/dumpling type of Russian/Ukrainian dishes. He was looking for a very specific recipe (filled with BOTH potato AND cheese, not only potato or cheese) and specific saucing. The basic ones (usually served with sour cream or in a broth) are widely available. That was not his question.

On pic simple vareniki. Its dumplings with potato.. Can be only potato. Potato with mushroom s or potato with cheese , with cheese its kind new thinks. Not traditional .. So what's why not many have it. Even in Ukraine or Russian not many restaurant had it.

Indeed. That's the point. He's looking for something unusual both in the dumping and  in the saucing. That's why I suggested he find a good restaurant and ask them to make a special order. In my experience the Ukraine Restaurant in Jomtien is a good (Russian and Ukraine food) restaurant but I have no idea if they'll agree to do his special unusual dish.

It is pies to Russians. The link explains it's not pies to others. Not everyone is Russian. The link is not stupid. Your extremely over the top reaction to the fact that a word means different things to other nationalities is the stupid thing here. Again perhaps your English language skill level makes it hard for you to understand what the link is saying. It doesn't really matter though in the context of this thread. We know the O.P. is not looking for pies.
