Police in Uthai Thani said that they suspect a husband and wife team were responsible for a vicious attack on a downtown gold shop yesterday evening.

CCTV caught the terrifying moments as the robbers dressed in balaclavas burst into the Mae Tua Guay store in Nong Chang district.

Owner Janyong Noparat, 53, fought back and was hit with a metal lever and had his face smashed into a display case. His wife Somporn, 55, was also hurt as the thieves grabbed necklaces and other gold items worth 3.7 million baht.

Janyong - the young brother of local mayor Damrong Noparat - said he had just shut up shop when the robbers pulled up a half closed shutter and entered the shop.

There was a tall thin man and a woman, he said.Daily News reported that he was covered in blood from the attack with the lever aimed at his head.

After they had grabbed 188 baht weight of gold and stuffed it in a bag the robbers rushed out and got in an old white Toyota Vios behind the shop.

Deputy mayor Salok Phantumek, hearing the robbery nearby, pulled out a gun and shot at the tires without success as the couple fled in the direction of Wat Nong Khun Chart.

Police said they suspect a husband and wife team. They are studying outside CCTV to find where they went.

CCTV inside the shop was clear and has given them some good ideas.

Mayors carry guns now ? What is this, Dodge city ?

Why should the mayor not carry a gun ?

Properly registered many people do in Thailand

I hope they are caught

Nah...that would have led to an arrest at a disused lot at Heathrow

Perhaps the shop owner should have had the gun.

They've been caught. A "dark skinned" foreigner and his wifey. I believe news said he is Arabic.

I have to wonder if the gold shop got "ALL"  their gold back.     Some might have been lost along the way.
