For each of the last 5 years my Non-O visa expiration date has been April 4th. I’ve always extended it around the end of March, as now. Today, for the first time in now 5 years, I got my extension but they only extended me from April 4th until February 9th. Is this a new thing, or a mistake? I assume it’s a mistake but how can it be corrected?

I assume you mean "extension of stay."  Is it possible that Feb 9th is your passport's expiration-date?  If not, this sounds like an error.

Yes, that is probably the reason. O.P. -- when does your passport expire? I'm assuming that's what happened and no you won't get an additional two months when you get a new passport.

Yes, I now see that is the problem.  The passport does expire in February 9. I probably should’ve got a new one before I did this. Oh well…

A fairly cheap reminder that you have to get a new passport

As your extension expires on April 4 it would have been too late for a new one now.

Ay least you only lost a couple of months. I lost half a year because my passport expired (same rule for non-imm B). 10 years ago the same thing happened, but I was still granted the full 12 months. I guess the rule changed in the mean-time.

Unfortunately yes.

So twice the paperwork, cost, proof of money/income.

That is correct. the rules changed several years ago.

Now you get the extension till the expire date of the passport and you have to apply for a complete new extension when you receive your new passport.

That's not entirely true.:shock1:

If he gets a new passport tomorrow, the current ten month extension WILL be transferred (you need to go in to do it and it's a free service) to the new passport!

What's changed from the past is that in the past he would have gotten a full year's extension and that full year would have been transferred to the new passport even thought the current passport expires before the full year.

Yes you are correct, what i meant to say is that in the past you would get the remaining missing months back in your new passport when the extension is transferred.

Now they don't do that anymore and you have to apply for a complete new extension. (after the transfer of the x amount of months)
