Two foreign tourist have been fined after taking photos which were deemed to be inappropriate at a Bangkok temple.

The two Serbian tourists were apprehended on Saturday and fined a combined amount of 10,000 baht.

Earlier this week, the 31 year old tourists, who had been visiting Thailand on holiday, had taken photos Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

The photos, which showed the woman posing on a wall with her legs and underwear exposed, went viral and resulted in the couple being heavily criticised by Thai people commenting online.

Such was the backlash the images gained national news coverage.

On Saturday the pair admitted taking the photos and were charged with obscenity by Suvarnabhumi airport police who found them to have breached Section 388 of the Criminal Code.

The Serbian couple were given the maximum fine of 5,000 baht each.

In their defence the couple said that they had no idea they had done anything wrong.

5,000 Baht each for "obscenity".   In a country with Pat Pong, Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza.   Hmm... a wee bit hypocritical, aren't we?

Big joke, you are becoming a big joke. Want to do something useful? Get up off your a++e and go after serious criminals, not just a silly young girl flashing her tush.

If only the dangerous drivers were given maximum punishments, it might just make the roads slightly safer.

They say they "didn't know they were doing anything wrong". A Syrian Immigrant in Canada beat his wife for half an hour with a hockey stick and used that exact same excuse.

Go inside some of these temples and take some photos of what some of the monks are doing in their little huts.

No respecting the temple and religious ways, is the obscenity...duh!

Like many countries, Thailand has some flaws. Therefore, foreigners should be able to do whatever they want, where and when they want, with no repercussions.

Not at all. The areas you describe are in a specific area and do not have religious significance. They are not designated cultural heritage sites. We all know what to expect . In this case we had two ignorant selfish people who defiled a religious locale and who engaged in destructive behaviour. It was inappropriate to climb on the structure in the manner that they did. What do you think happens to foreigners caught stealing stones and rocks at Greek heritage sites, or at China's Great Wall.  It wasn't too long ago that the Serbians were running concentration camps, engaging in genocide, and burning down culturally sensitive  locations, so please do not  present these people as innocent angels. The country is still in a development phase as the EU forces it to adopt civilized norms.

What are they doing Uncle? I don't know. Please tell.

I only go in temples if they are air-conditioned and have comfy chairs.

The outraged Thai that took the indecent photo is the one that should be fined. The perspective that the boyfriend was taking was quite decent as she had her skirt over her legs.

It is not Pat Pong, Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza. It  is Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

Show respect for Buddhism like You would in a church in Europe. Quite simple  !!!

Wow!  They had no idea they had done anything wrong.

Yet they were still fined.

Is this a precident?

Will the watch wearer and the penis eater's excuses also be disallowed?

Will they also be fined?

Hmm.... This country tries so hard to pretend these sites mean anything just to ripp off tourists. Buddhism is a joke. Reality hurts! My local temple are full of illegal loggers. Got a photo this morning of a monk up a tree from neighbouring land cutting it down. I complained and now it appears they can do as they wish undeterred. Buddhism sux. My wifes no longer buddhist. Anyone who is is ignorant. I suggest thais fix themselves and fast or buddhism will go out of fashion soon enough. Out of all the religions buddhism was the only one that seemed to make sense buy the ways of monks is a far more serious issue tarnishing buddhism far more than a girl with a skirt. Despicable...

There is no hypocrisy. The obscenities of Pat Pong, Soi Cowboy, and Nana Plaza are also not allowed at the temples.

This is a ridiculous excuse. One should ask them if they would take photos of such a nature in a Serbian Orthodox church. As I said in an earlier note people should respect any religion and its symbols anywhere in the world. I think the Thai authorities did the right thing fining them to the maximal extent. I do hope other tourists learn from this.

Obscenity is prevalent all over Thailand and by Thai people, this is not obscenit by comparison ?

Inappropriate yes. Destructive behaviour? A little OTT don't you think?

No doubt, to please you, when these young not "innocent angels" return to Serbia they can be also charged with running concentration camps and engaging in genocide.

I wonder how much they charged the monk for knocking one out on the reserved seat on the public bus last week.
