You can not transfer a visa to a new passport.

Immigration can transfer your extension of stay to a new passport with a stamp from your original visa.

This is a free procedure

Of course they can transfer a visa, they note down the visa number/date/issuer in your new passport.

Not everyone has an extension of stay in their old passport..

Immigration do not transfer visa, only permission of stay or extension of stay.

They only note your initial visa number.

They will not transfer a multiple non immigrant visa to your new passport.

Whilsr we can easily get into semantics if we are not careful...

1.A visa will not be transferred. You carry both new and old passports un5il the next visa is arranged and stamped in the new Passport.

2. An extension will be transferred to the new passport.

My old passport has a multiple Non-O visa issued 7 month before the passport expired so consequently I had to get a new passport which I used together with the old one when passing immigration.

After the last leg of the multiple Non-O I got a 1 year extension based on that visa and the old passport got a big stamp with my new passport number, date and place of issue in the stamp.
This "forward referral" stamp was made by Samui immigration and at the same time they put a big "backward referral" stamp in the new passport, a stamp which has the old passport number, date of issue, visa type, and last date of entry into Thailand.
Below that stamp is hand written the visa type (again), visa number, and visa expiry date.
They charged 500baht for that transfer and I had to come back 3 days later to make the 1 year extension application.
I have since that got another 1 year extension and they didn't ask to see the old passport/visa.

So, what is your idea of what a visa transfer is?

Ripping out the visa page from the old passport and staple it into the new?

Visas are only used when entering Thailand.

Yes, I also have a stamp with my visa number, that visa was used up many years ago.

I'm on extension of stay it's not a visa.

Using the right terminology is crucial.

For example, if you are on a non-B visa entry it's not cancelled if you loose your job but if you are on extension it ends same day as you quit.

BTW, transfer of stamps to new passport is supposed to be free.

If they don't have extension they have a permission to stay that gets transferred.

I know but you don't complain when you have just realized that there is no more Firefly to Penang and you have 6 days left of your permission to stay.

(When applying for a 1 year extension you should have at least 20 days remaining.)

My intention was to get another multiple Non-O, I liked the trips to Penang and its curries  but I ended up on 1 year extensions instead..

I had slightly different experience when I had mine transferred to a new passport at Samui Immigration about 1½-year ago, 20th October 2016, but things may have changed since then.

My original Non-O visa, based for my first extension of stay due to retirement, where transferred to my new passport – which make sense, as you need to show a copy of the original Non-O visa when first applying for extension of stay based on... – furthermore a second Non-O from 2010 where stamped in together with my last entry into the Kingdom and the Arrival Card number.

If things not has changed since then, it's probably same procedure now. Below image is the transferred Visas...

Furthermore my last extension of stay, until 26th October 2016, and my last Re-entry permission were transferred – at that time I also applied for a new 1-year extension-of-stay based on retirement, which was permitted later and stamped separately in my new passport – below image shows the transfer stamps...

I think I paid 500 baht for the service – fair enough, and I've seen posts about other immigrations also charging 500 baht – but without a receipt (never get one from Samui Immigration) I can be mistaken.

I got my new passport late August, and did the transfers in October when applying for extension-of-stay.

I would presume to do it as soon as possible, like when doing next 90-day address report, as you'll need to show your passport for that, and your old passport with visa and extension stamp is "cancelled".

When you receive your new passport it has to come together with a letter from the embassy, which states that the embassy has issued a new passport. That letter is important and need to be given to the Immigration when applying for transfer of stamps (or a copy of the letter, think they kept my original letter, as I don't have it anymore).

Furthermore, be aware that your old passport number is used several places for identification, like Drivers License and bank accounts, etc. You'll as soon as possible need to change your passport number any place your old pasport number is used, for example you cannot identify yourself in a bank using your new passport, if the number has not been changed. Some banks, like Bangkok Bank, will issue new bank-books, as the passport number is included in your signature page. Some banks have to make the number change for each account, others say they can do it in "one go" – which in my case was not the whole truth, as so-called Fund Books are in a separate system, and therefore not updated. Also some plastic cards, like Central One card, include a passport number, so if not changed you cannot use your accumulated points, as you need to identify yourself with passport (or in some rare cases a Thai DL is accepted, but if passport number is changed, it's no help).

My information is based on conditions at end-of-2016, if any later changes I hope some other forum-member will kindly update.
