Pattaya is not as good as it used to be.

I haven’t been to Pats for over 3 yrs I think. My trip report is as follows:

- Walking street is really quiet and has gone downhill big time. How can city hall allow a McDonalds on WS? A good bar called the ‘Rolling Stones’ bar has been removed and replaced with an ugly looking nightclub that had no customers. That RS bar had a lot of atmosphere with pool tables and live band. I cant believe how s**t that area of new development is.

- There are a lot more massage places now. I was at the main bus station and hired a private Songthaew to take me to Central festival. He took the back entrance (route) and drove towards bkk hospital but then turned left in the soi before it. Up that street we drove past a massive building that had 4 double decker buses in it. I asked the driver about it who said it’s a massage joint for Koreans. I can only presume they must have a lot of workers in there to service that many tourists- unless they are waiting around all day.

- Soi 6 is where the atmosphere is. Have the walking street girls migrated to soi 6? I found the screaming women intimidating I will admit….

- Soi LK metro seems to be ok still but maybe it’s the low season now

- Many Thai’s say there’s not as many tourists this year compared to the past

- Not so many soi dogs around compared to years ago.

- Definitely an interesting place to live out ones retirement if your into the booze and girls. An old friend in his 60’s proudly showed me photos of him and his PAYG girls in their 20’s.

- Main beach looks like its receded a lot. In 5 to 10 yrs do you think all the sand will be submerged and water coming up to the wall instead?

- Quality of women, in general, seem to be worse- rough, fat and ugly. Some nice lookers here and there but I assume they will disappear back to university life in June.

So thats my non judgemental trip report. Happy hunting

This is really the wrong forum to post this thread. This is a very prudish forum where people either don't have sex or don't admit it, and certainly don't admit to paying for it

Maybe you should get out a bit more. Ever been as far as the neighbouring town of where you live?

There better still be plenty of non-fat and ugly PAYG material at reasonable prices when i retire there in 25 years

You're the first person ever to miss the Soi dogs.

It is low season so less people. I'm liking it with most of the tourists now gone

25 years and still love it.

Granted it was a tad different back then ;)

I dont feel like addressing all your points but why should city hall object to a McDonalds on Walking Street.    My own opinion of WS and Soi 6  is they are both disgusting.

Where did he say he misses them?

For that matter, where does he say he misses the slappers from 3 years ago?

Pretty good non-judgmental appraisal IMHO but considering the OP is comparing his current drive-by with his experiences of only 3 years ago, that's a mere blink of an eye to the old Pattaya whoredogs, weekend warriors, God's gifts, and hansum man legends in their own lunchtime, past and present, including the emigres who have moved elsewhere but still carry a torch for Sodom-by-the-Sea.

All you other prudes, pontificates and otherwise puritanical pantywaists, thanks for your time. Now jog on.

And their girlfriend, wife or otherwise significant other is different.

...or worked as cashier, honest.

"Walking street is really quiet" low season

"walking st really busy" high season

not rocket science

Not everyone is a loser that lives in Pattaya. Honest!

He didn't say it but still you brought it up for some reason, what slappers are you talking about?

Pattaya is not as good as it used to be.

Is anywhere in the world as good as it used to be?

I spent my life as an adventure tour leader. Traveled-worked in 37 different countries, drove overlands from London to Kathmandu, crossed the Amazon in a truck, walked in the Himalaya's, ran out of diesel in the Sahara, paddled down the Sun Khosi in Nepal, climbed a few volcanoes in Indonesia, swam with the  manta rays in the coral triangle, watched with the young orangutans in Borneo and written a book about my travels. And you?

And how many go go bars you visit there? Yep zero! Pattaya wins.

Lots of places, the world is a better place now than ever before. When people lament that places are not the same as 20 or 30 years ago they usually are really lamenting the loss of their youth.

And just coincidentally, perhaps, there's been a sudden emergence of all-you-can-eat Thai buffet BBQ restaurants in the area.

When did Pattaya use to be good? The 1960s, 80s, 90s, 10 years ago? Last year?

My take is 1995-2005.

Thai village life for Farangs is BETTER than it used to be IMO.

I moved to Isaan in pre Thaksin days and before investment in infrastructure when many village roads were dirt tracks, there was no water supply and buffaloes worked on the land etc etc bla bla ..

Life for farang nowadays is completely different with a Makro/Big C/Homepro/Tesco etc etc..within 1 hour drive on proper roads. There are more farang out there too if you get tired of watching Thai soaps.....Then you start talking about GSM... 2g or 3g or 4g or 5g...You were lucky if you had analogue!! Then came True and internet....Jeez they are more connected now than in rural Dorset from which I hail!!

Village life rough for a farang ? My arse it is!!

96 for me. I left Indonesia at the end of Euro 96 to move to BKK. I had been there before in 93 so the first weekend I drove down to Patts to check it out.

Driving down the hill on to Beach Road I have never felt so at home anywhere else I had been and I'd been around a bit too!!

Loved it then - Love it now!!

I wouldn't count on it.  25 years is a hell of a long time and the world really is changing.
