Parking in neutral

I have a Nissan March which is automatic. I tried to park at BKK airport the other day, and the only spaces available required leaving the car in neutral as it blocked a space. It doesn't seem possible to do this with automatic transmission as an alarm sounds, and continues to sound, if you try. The car also cannot be locked.

 

Any solution?

A lot of automatics have some way of bypassing this safety interlock allowing the car to be placed in Park, engine stopped, ignition key removed, transmission shifted from Park to Neutral and the car locked. Usually there's a slot or button somewhere on or near the transmission selector bezel but in some marques, this may be blanked-off or have some sort of plug that can be removed. Note that some are easier to remove than others! Once the 'plug' is removed, one inserts the ignition key in the hole to depress the hidden safety switch at the same time as pressing the regular unlock button on the top-side of the shift stick and sliding it into Neutral. There may be some chime or warning light when you open the door but you should be able to lock it up and the parking guy can push the car around.

When the guard pushes your vehicle into another car or a concrete bollard, who pays if there is a scratch?

You need to put the car in park, shut it off, pull the key. Then there's a little button near the P indicator on the shifter bezel - press that button down, and you'll be able to shift back to N. You can then lock and leave the car as normal. Make sure your wheels are straight when you do this, and do not set the handbrake.

You do... or your insurance does.

 

Pretty much every public and private car parking lot ALL OVER THE WORLD has a legal disclaimer, clearly posted, that states they are not responsible for any damage to anyones vehicles in their garage, driveway, parking lot, whatever, etc..

That is true but I can park a car properly. Can’t help when Somchai pushes it into a Merc and I get soaked!!

Yep, folk think the attendant will take care of stuff, but when he disappears for lunch granny or pissed off guy does the pushing ....Crazy practice...

If you worry about your car drive around until you find a regular parking spot, quite easy.

My Wife say Auto should be marked thus.... S=Stop. F=Forwards.B=Backwards. The D1&2 are silly things no one she knows uses, like the Sport Mode twisty thing that makes it bumpy, So There, dont argue.!!.

I think DAF had that in the '60's. F=Forward, R=Reverse N=Neutral.

Yes, CVT. Same speed reverse as forward.

you are not forced to park there, you can look for a conventional bay

Does the ride in question have that override button...Some it is hidden but accessible by a mechanic for service stuff..

Drove a contractor's Unimog in China a few years ago. Between high and low ratio, there was 18 forward gears and the same 18 were available in reverse.

Average reverse speed around 55 km/h
