I am in the midst of a complete renovation. The ceilings are all removed from my house and I am thinking about building above ceiling storage or possibly a Loft Style usable living area for the kids. Lofted/Cathedral style ceilings and railings open to below.

Does anyone have pics of their above ceiling storage?

Has anyone attempted to build lofts into their homes here?.

We have "attic" storage space above our two upstairs bathrooms.

We have steep pitch "traditional" roofs so there's actually standing space over much of the area. The floor is steel framework with Shera floorboards on top (and the bathroom ceiling below).

It does get pretty warm up there mind, our insulation is on the room ceilings, attic space is well vented with gable and eve vents.

I'll see if I can find some photos.

EDIT Loft floor during construction.

Yeah, that was the image I had in my head from reading your initial post.

If you can drop the ceiling height in the room under the loft slightly you can win a little extra headroom up there.

Kids will love it, mum won't if she's forever bashing her head.

You will need insulation between the roof tiles and the attic ceiling if you don't want roasted kids.

I was planning on 6 inch Stay Cool Insulation above all the ceilings anyways.

If I do decide to do Cathedral Ceilings and construct a Loft. Is it recommended to leave an air space between the insulation and roof? Or can the insulation go against the roof?

I would use a foam slab between roof rafters under the liner membrane already in situ under your roof tiles.

If it's a part-time living space if possible install a North light window of whatever design to suit.

Also extractor fans for when the air-con is not in use.

Crossy,

What was the thickness of the Shera Board Flooring you used and the size of the steel? What layout did you use .60×.60?

I am looking at spanning 3.5 meters and will hang the drywall ceiling off of this steel framing as well. What size steel and floor thickness would you recommend for storage areas?
