Popular Post Frank James
Lonely Are The Brave (1962) I saw a brief reference to this film in a recent article about blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. Kirk Douglas was instrumental in reviving Mr Trumbo's career, which has now been immortalized in the excellent new film, Trumbo. When Kirk and Kubrick hired Trumbo to write the screenplay for Spartacus, and boldly displayed DT's name in the credits, the blacklist era was DEAD FOREVERMORE, after ruining so many lives over many years. Howard Fast, who wrote the original novel, was also a blacklist victim. To prove his esteem for Trumbo wasn't a one-off thing, Kirk bought the film rights to a minor novel by Edward Abbey, and turned it over to Trumbo for the screenplay. Mr. Douglas loved the script so much, he didn't change a word of it. Abbey himself was a dispruptor of the American status quo, especially about the ruination of the American West, before and after this novel. He later penned a cult classic called The Monkey Wrench Gang, about a pre-Earth First group whose goal was to stop construction of a dam in the West. It was a thinly disguised reference to the infamous and controversial Glen Canyon Dam, which got built, anyway. I saw this film years ago, and was really impressed by it. Saw it again last night (great print available from the usuals) in glorious black and white, starring Kirk Douglas as crazy cowboy Jack Burns, on a mission to break his buddy out of a local jail. My admiration for it is still as strong as back then. The friend is facing two years Federal prison time for assisting “illegal aliens” in getting across the border. The friend, however, chooses to stay and face the two years, so Jack breaks out of jail and heads for the mountains on his beautiful, temperamental mare, Whiskey. Walther Matthau is outstanding as the Sheriff who must (reluctantly) give chase. Kirk must have been in the best shape of his life, as he does all of his own stunts, scrabbling up this rugged defile with a horse that has other ideas. That's all I'll say here. The IMDB database has a lot of good info on the film, which I cannot praise highly enough. There's never been a better “Western” than this one. OFF THE CHARTS!
oxo1947
BBC 2 ran the first episode (it has 3) of "One Child" last night........... first run on Sundance TV in 2015...It doesn't have rave ratings 67% on Rotten tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/tv/one-child/s01/ when it first came out. "Unbelievable rubbish" is a rather accurate description, I'd say. The idea itself was alright but the execution... Seems that also Sundance TV messes up once in while.

I think it depends on where you lived Cluadius...I was brought up in the east end of London--like you in the 40-50s, it wasn't an unusual sight there. But I suppose London was always a bit of a melting pot---in fact the first non white MP was elected in 18?? & something, (can never be bothered to Google after the 3rd glass of red).... Naoroji....they still have a street named after him in Finsbury. From a boys home I was placed into the merchant navy, where my first exotic stop was Liverpool--around the docks area they seem to be more black faces than London. I learned latter there were of course, & the Beatles dedicated one of their songs to them in Sgt Pepper. "Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!" ..............The Hendersons will all be there ..............Late of Pablo Fanques Fair, what a scene Pablo Fanque, a black guy was born was in Norwich in 17??, & something, & was in his time one of the most successful circus performers and proprietors in England. He tried to employ mainly black artists, & they traveled around England performing...... but in the off season made their base in Liverpool's dock area. I am not trying to buy into you & your close friends argument Cluadius....... I also do think the BBC has got far to PC over the years, I cant see them really employing another Dennis Potter or Ken Loach even if they appeared. -------------------------------------------------------------- Anyway back to the present & Shetland..... now on its 5th episode, its a good strong story that now reaches into the Glasgow underworld........ if you like Vera etc......this is really worth a watch. Finding the time to view all the stuff you guys are sharing is not so easy---I am fast becoming a couch potato , ....saw on Face/B some friend from Oz asking my wife what I do with my time now..... her answer---Him oh now him-he movie critique. ......................
