Cotton Valve

Featured Replies

Just had Mrs J's Mazda Lantis repaired ... water leak. I couldn't fix it myself as it needed  to go up in the air ...

The guy said pipework to/from Cotton Valve failed (or sounded like that). He said the valve does something when you start the engine ... another water path or something like that.

Anyone any ideas .... google failed me, or I failed it!

Hmmmm, thermostat....:stoner:

Could be, "cutoff valve". Once upon a time thermostats were on top of the engine behind 2 or 3 studs (and a lump hammer to get the cover off) ...

I can't think of anything else that would do anything to water flow when starting.

I'm gonna call it a Cotton Valve from now on but Trans is probably right with Thermostat...

I have gleamed a little more info Mrs J ... it is a butterfly valve ... used during or just after engine start ... the rubber pipework (probably to operate it) is only about 1/8" bore. Am wondering if it is some sort of Thermostat bypass ie provides a flow around the head until the thermostat opens and takes over ... whatever it is right at the back of the engine and inaccessible unless the car is up in the air ... the thermostat is on the front of the engine ...

I will find out more from?? and post

The butterfly valve is another word used for the throttle valve incased

inside the throttle body.

In some cars the throttle body incorporates 2 coolant pipes (inlet & outlet) to operate the cold starting of the engine by opening the throttle on cold start slightly to give an increase in idle speed.

As the engine warms up the warmer coolant closes down the butterfly

valve to reduce the idle speed.

In addition you probably misheard Cold Start Valve as Cotton Valve, as this is the valve that these coolant pipes operate to open the butterfly

valve (throttle valve).

Aaaah, my old Volvo had a water flow temp thingy on the idle thingy...:stoner:

Thanks ... MrsJ had found by googling, a guy who had a problem with this valve ... was in Thai so no wonder I couldn't find it ... she translated the thai word he used into butteryfly valve which as you say is the throttle valve ... mystery solved ...
