JimmyJ Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 I've read with interest the thread on finding a health insurance policy for expats living in Thailand, as well as Nancy L's posts re: "Do not travel here without trip insurance". What companies provide a short term (3 month) policy for a trip to Thailand and neighboring countries? I'm going to call cignaglobal on Monday to see if they offer short term policies (I thought they do but reading the website it seems like it's geared to Expat Health Insurance rather than for a trip only). But any others anyone recommends I contact besided cignaglobal?
Sheryl Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 How old are you? Makes a big difference as many policies have age limits. If under 65 or so, try world nomads, you can apply online With any travel insurance check the provisions regarding motorcycle travel. Even if you do not plan on it, in Thailand taking a motorcycle taxi can sometimes be unavoidable. Some policies will not cover it at all. World Nomads will if you add it as an activity but even with them, you must wear a helmet and (if you are the driver) have a valid license, etc. No policy will cover you if you rent and drive motorcycle without a valid license, or without wearing a helmet, or while intoxicated (as many travelers have found out the hard way...). There is option to add in other high risk sports/activities to a world nomads policy as well e.g. if you might go parasailing be sure to choose level 4 activity cover. 1
lopburi3 Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 This might be a site to check various options - what you want is travel insurance. Suspect airline ticket sales may also have options available, just as travel agents always do. https://www.moneysupermarket.com/travel-insurance/ 1
Sheryl Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 If you are older, try AXA, they will insure up to age 80 https://www.axa.co.uk/insurance/personal/travel/cover-types/ (other site if based elsewhere - with travel insurance it is bets to get a policy issued out of the country or region you are from). 1
Justfine Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 A google search reveals many. Can do it online in a few minutes. No need to call anyone. 1
scubascuba3 Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 Backpacker travel insurance is the one you want for 3 months. Depends how old you are often they have a limit of 45/50. Also annual travel insurance policies are available with max 90 days a year, this would be the best and cheapest option. If from the UK, travelsupermarket.com confused.com comparethemarket.com any of those 1

Will check out the annual policies.

Thanks for the suggestion - I'm out of the USA. I started filling out the axa online form but then got to: "must be a permanent resident of the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man." Will search for some USA based companies.
Sheryl Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 There are many US based policies. Also some Medicare Advantage/Medigap policies will cover emergency care during trips abroad. Not all, but some.Best to get travel insurance issued by a company inthe country you are from, as a mainstay of travel insurance policies is covering your repatriation home for care (where you must have othet coverage of some type) . That is why costs are so reasonable compared to regular health insurance -- they count on being able to bring you back home for anything requiring sustained care. That, and not covering any thing other than emergencies.Sent from my SM-J701F using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app 1

rjbangkok Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 i suggest that any coverage you buy is PRIMARY COVERAGE
dddave Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 OP..If you have any of the major US credit cards, check and see if they offer any kind of travel coverage. Many do.
