5 Year Motorcycle Driving License Renewal Questions

JimMorris

Recommended Posts

I have a 5 year Thai motorcycle driving license that will be expiring in the near future. Because of travel I will not be able to renew the driving license prior to its expiry date.

How long after the license expiry date can I still renew the license without being required to take a new written test and road driving test?

Also, I believe a medical certificate is no longer required for a 5 year driver license renewal, but can anyone please reconfirm on this?

Any information that can be provided on the above 2 questions will be much appreciated. Cheers.

You have up to one year without having to do additional  tests.

(from the rules, personally I have been only a few days after expiry)

Correct. No medical required for 5yr to 5yr.

(from own experience in March this year)

It may be one year to renew, but perhaps after 90 days at least a driving test is required?

Absolutely not.

After one year the theory test has to be redone.

After three years theory and driving test have to be redone (basically like starting from scratch just that you should get a new 5yr license not a temporary).

Unfortunately the DLT website had been restructured a while ago and since then the English version is just a mess/garbage (text does not match title etc.).

The previous version was clear and made sense.

So there is currently no original English language source that is useful.

No idea where this keyvisa site has it's number from but neither in the English or the Thai text there is any mention of a 90 day period.

If you are renewing a 5 year license with a retirement visa will you be given 5 years again on the drivers license renewal or only 2 years now?

Also, is the yellow book Tabien Bahn accepted in Bangkok at the Morchit Department of Land Transport office for proof of residential address for renewal of a motorcycle driver's license?

Thanks

Can you post the link you have to the Thai site you mentioned perhaps?

Hope a Bangkok member can tell.

No idea of course.

Maybe quicker to ask them directly.

"retirement visa" standing for a one year extension based on retirement?

Then 5 years of course.

Thank you. Sorry, I am a bit confused. If I currently have a 1 year already approved retirement visa, will I be able to get a 5 year renewal of my current 5 year license? Thank you.

Is this the same page about renewal in English on the link below?

No. The Thai site describes the 5 yr to 5 yr as you were looking for.

The link you cite is for a new temporary license.

And it looks like they have simply removed the English text for 5 yr to 5 yr (which was messed up).

Successfully renewed at Morchit Department Of Land Transport. I can confirm the following:

1 - Yellow book is acceptable as proof of residence address for foreigners at Morchit.

2 - If renewing shortly after the previous expiry date of your old license then they will give you nearly 6 years instead of only 5 on the renewal.

3 - A 1 year Non-O Retirement visa is acceptable for a 5 year renewal.

4 - No medical certificate required.

5 - Renewal fee total is 255 Baht for motorcycle license.
