AIS, TRUE....any others?

Recommended Posts

In a new condo.  Front office tries to NOT speak any English.  Ready for internet.  I know they are served by AIS and True.  3BB is no go...It is a high rise, and they seem to have a grip on wiring...which is good but may limit my choices.  Any suggestions? Near the river...Thanks in advance!

agreed, plenty of horror stories for just about every telecom company on the planet.  It is Fibre....And AIS is 599 for 50/30 without the very poor tv package.  but was mainly wondering if there are any other companies that might be operating there.  THX.

I was in your shoes in Jan, I went with AiS fibre (I think 700B). I work online, Skype calls all day. No problem to date with streaming on my Nvidia Shield TV also.... hope that assists!

yeah, looks like AIS...but I wasn't happy about the 650 fee....they made it sound like I have to pay because I am foreigner...even though I am property owner...translations were horrible.  More and more those i Gerber cards get flagged for security risks.....otherwise 10 TH B per hour for a good chair in an air on room with 10 THB cokes isn't bad....unless the screaming kids are in there.  I don't like the way ,AIS tries to get you to package a bunch of crap into one big monthly bill....kind of like Verizon....gives you much less flexibility.

Everybody pays the 650 THB fee, True has it as well, just have a look at their website then you see that it's not a foreigner fee ?

About 6 months ago i chose True, the main reason was that AIS has a clause that you have to stay at the address where you initially booked it for at least one year (probably you can still move, but would have to pay extra). True didn't have such a clause and told me moving is free (and my GF is watching TV, so the TV package is ok)

there is also ToT but most people don't seem to like them.  I used their internet service for a couple years and didn't have a problem.

a is called and said splitter was full....so it is True...And they have the same 50/20 service, but both are too busy trying to sell smartphones.  599 per month, 650 install.

I was told by 3bb that I had to pay the year in advance unless I supplied a Thai friend's info.

What b/s! Anyways that is what I ended up doing to get connected and the speed is good.

she told me I needed to show WP...I said extension for retirement...typical.  And she told me four times I needed a copy of rental contract...but I own.  Just wasn't clicking.  But, TBH, she was far ahead of the people at the shop.

That's normal unless you have a work permit.

Also not really surprising. Would a company in our home country make a contract over a year with a foreigner who might just leave the country any time?

The Thai friend then acts as a guarantor

Absolutely yes. You sign a contract pay first month and then if you miss next t payment they throw the switch and you're cut off. Company has no risk. That's what happens in my home country. There is zero risk for the internet provider.

How many retirees have work permits

the only place I have seen not take a long stay visa instead of WP, was a branch of TMB....of course opened accounts on both sides of their office no problem.  I have yellow book, with Thai ID number, and may very well have credit in LO S.  Teachers with WPs do runners on a daily basis...

The provider has costs for the installation of your internet connection, the router costs him money, the TV box costs him money. I assume this costs him at least 4000THB. The first month you pay maybe just 1200THB, so if you make a runner after a month the provider loses about 2800THB

they would be out a router and the cost of install...not much.

Very close to zero percent of those on extensions for retirement have WPs.

My point was that in my home country no one would ever ask for one year in advance. It doesn't happen.

3bb makes you pay for the router 800 baht.

I didn't get TV box just internet.

If I pull a runner they're out 2 peoples" wages for 2 hours and some cable.

My bill at installation seems to show I paid for the hookup or possibly 2 month's payment in advance.

No way they can loose.

SINET have me two months free for paying one year...but it certainly wasn't required.  There is no rule saying WP..there may be rules on tourist visas, though.  I will take names and go to their headquarters if they tell me I need a WP...felt like doing it at TMB...

Yes, in our home country people who come with a temporary visa most likely wouldn't get a contract at all, so quite nice that they give us temporary people the option to pay in advance to still get an internet connection.

The people who install the internet work for external companies, not directly for the internet provider (at least here in Udon, but probably everywhere else it's the same), they have cars with every branding and clothes with every branding ?

So the internet provider pays a fixed amount for the installation of an internet connection to these external companies, i don't know how much it is, but most likely more than 200THB. I think something in the range of 1000-2000THB is not totally unrealistic

Afaik you can't get a WP when on a retirement extension, so it is zero percent. But i assume 99% of retirees have a Thai GF / wife who can sign the contract for them

They give a truck marked with 3bb on the side and uniforms that say 3bb to outside contractors?

I don't have a temporary visa,  but a long stay visa.

Now if some random Thai person signs a paper it is now legitimate. What guarantee is that that you will pay?

None.

The cable companies have close to zero risk for max profit. I just thought it was weird. That's all.

Fine if you think it's normal to have a Thai sign for you.

Temp visa holders to Canada can get hooked up to internet no hassle.

Sure, why not? Other companies do this as well, for example DHL

I had a talk with the guys when they installed my True internet connection, they told me that they are an external company and have the branded stuff for the other companies as well, if you see them installing internet somewhere just ask them

Your visa (or extension of stay) gives you a permission to stay for a maximum of one year, which makes it temporary

If you have permanent residency it would not be temporary, but i assume with permanent residency you would also get a contract without a WP without paying in advance.

If you don't pay they will ask the Thai person to pay it, if he doesn't pay they will sue him for it. So a random Thai person would probably not sign for your contract.

I have bought two condos, have five THAI bank accountz, one THAI brokerage account, a PEA, an MEA, a THAI  taxpayer ID, as well as a 13 digit THAI ID number, all in my own name....yes, a high percentage of retirees have THAI GF, but how many of them are more credit worthy than the farang?  a few, but a rarity.  Seen Cuban refugees get COX INTERNET accounts in the US, after being there less than a week.  Often, it can be activated remotely.  They can likely render those routers useless, too...I gave away a 3BB router a few months ago...tired of looking at it.

update:  True came on Wednesday, knocked on the door early with a guy from the condo office.  Told me I had to pay 2400, plus the 650....for what is advertised as free everything.  I told them to take a hike.  Just got connected with Dots, there was a flyer in the lobby.  50/20 and free TV.....paid first month, VAT, and a 500 deposit on equipment...working good, knock wood.
