What do you do during long bus/minibus rides?

Featured Replies

Have a 9 hour ride coming up. From what I've read (and remember) any work done on a laptop is impossible. What do you guys do? I think I'll load up a few audiobooks and buy a battery pack for the phone.

Books are a wonderful invention. They don't even need batteries.

  • Read my Kindle.

Rub my buddha amulets and hope the driver does not fall asleep whilst driving.

Prayer is the only answer!:coffee1:

Swear never to drink again.  Same as the driver. Or sleep. Ditto

Take an aspirin, regularly do leg lifts and leg muscle contractions. Get out at every break and walk a bit.

I prefer the real thing.. but they can be hard to come by if you live in the countryside..

Kindle interposed with occasional bursts of hyperventilation.

Lots of smart Alek remarks. Of course, some bus drivers are wild. Nakhonchaiair are the best I know here.

If you've got a smartphone/tablet AND Netflix and/or Iflix then PRE download a few films/programmes and you're made.

Printies also an excellent suggestion!

Avoid minibus! They were designed as general trade vans for urban use. They have minimal structural strength and survival of passengers poor in event of crash. Crashes likely as minibuses typically driven at limit of the capacity of engine and brakes, plus high frequency of incompetent, sleepy, or drug or alcohol compromised drivers. Avoid like plague.

"What do you do during long bus/minibus rides?" What do I do? I take a plane, buses are for the poor and downtrodden.

If you travel on a bus with Nakhonchaiair, you can do nothing but try to cope with freezing temperatures.

At some point you fall in some kind of comatose sleep, from which it may be difficult to recover

(Thais fall asleep anywhere, at anytime, not because they are lazy or tired, but because they travel too much with Nakhonchaiair).

First of all make sure you ask for a seat as far from the tv screen as possible.

That of course is if you don't want your eardrums shattered by one of the inane Thai comedy shows which are always played on long trips.

Bring earplugs, neck pillow, a blanket and sleep [emoji38]

Dear OP, now you know:

never travel by van

never travel by bus

never use Nakhonchaiair

Looks like you should walk, Laddie!

Air conditioning is a curse or a blessing. I always wear a jacket when travelling ... in case the driver or pilot is an Eskimo ... easy to remove if necessary. There are blankets on NCA buses too.

1) I look at the driver's eyes to make sure he is not on yaba. (red or wide open) Once I had to postpone my trip because of this. Yes, I have been in tourist vans that went way too fast.

2) Make sure there is a seat belt to wear. Do not sit way in the back (just in case there is a collision).

3) I look at my smart-phone; read a book; listen to my tunes; or sleep.

4) I am not much of a person to socialize with for an entire trip.

Agree with the seatbelt ... Nakhonchaiair have them!

Agree, who needs to socialise!

The sound on NCA is in seat and you can switch it off.

What do you do during long bus/minibus rides?         ...................Probably die!

Last time there was a girl next to me and we were chatting all the way from CM to Bangkok, but I usually watch movies.

Listen to podcasts...read...play Cookie Run and/or Chess. All can be done on a tablet or even a phone.

Valium will see you through the journey.
