Swede alternative in Thailand?

Featured Replies

Hey all...

I want to have a go at making my own sweet pickle similar to branston pickle which goes fantastically well with cheese on sandwiches.

Does anyone know what would be the best replacement vegetable obtainable in thailand that is as close as possible to a swedish turnip?

I know they can't be got here as they are an autumn crop from temperate climates, so wouldn't really grow here.

Thanks in advance. :)

I have been looking for a similar alternative. Turnips are not swede and the taste is quite different, so, after a session with Google, I discovered that Daikon radish is a possible substitute. I did try it in a stew and was pleasantly surprised with the resulting flavour. Give it a try, they are cheap and easily available.

Daikon radish is a nice veg, would it work in a pickle, I think it would, what about Thai pumpkin, that would work, or

how about a tomato chutney, lots of recipes on the net, Branston pickle is a mixed veg pickle, so a mixture of veg would that work, give it a go .

Yes turnips are available here, they are imported from Australia,

but are very expensive, something like 300-400 THB Kg,which is

ridiculous,Makro and RimPing supermarket here in Chiang Mai

have them, don't know where you are.

If wanting to make a Branston like pickle, maybe try doing it

without the turnip, using Daikon, would give it a totally different

taste.

Swedes are available here - I bought some for my Christmas dinner. Homemade mango chutney goes surprisingly well with cheese sandwiches if you keep it on the spicy rather than the sweet side.

Thanks guys.... lots of very helpful info here.... I will try a few of these options and see what it is like, I will replace apple with unripened mango for sharpness i think, and daikons, carrots, tomatoes, onions and see what that lot turns out like....
