Mr Turners contribution to 4 wheels the Daimler 2.5 V8 as fitted to the Dart sports car and SP250 saloon ( think Inspector Morse style Mk II Jaguar ) of 50's/60's .. Compact , light , reasonably reliable and quite powerful for the day , t'was a jewel of a lump that could have gone on a lot longer but symptomatic of the way the motor industry ran itself during those days it was never fitted in the sister Jaguar cars for that would have put it in competition with Jags own XK DOHC 6 banger and the forthcoming V12 .. And only being fitted to Daimler badged cars limited the market it was ever offered to .. By the end of the 60's another light , small capacity V8 , the Rover lump was available so the moment passed for the little Daimler .. These have a glorious sound especially the SP with standard straight thru' tailpipes and command big money secondhand ..

When I lived there in the 90's, just behind MBK, on the stadium side if I remember correctly ( where the car parts shops were) there used to be a bike shop on the corner, when I lived there he had a few old BMW, including one with a sidecar, still there?

 

Also over where the old International telephone exchange was, on the klong side, there used to be a small shop which had a few old BMW also. The proprietor was an interesting old guy, used to race them in Thailand, some lovely old photos of him in his youth on the wall. Still there?

 

And for all you Trumpet fans there was a lovely ( I think T120) half way along Soi Rangnam, only used to come out on nice days. Anyone any history on these three things?

Maybe the keen might want to check them out unless anyone can supply any update.

 

The bike shop was just opposite the national stadium, when I was they had few Triumphs in, I use to stay in a hotel in the Soi near the shop when I last looked a few years ago the shop was gone.

Only 15 km from me is a Triumph, I think a T120, the owner is now back in the States, his wife looks after the bike, she has a large fish farm that keeps her in Thailand .many years we went for a run, Don on his Triumph me on a Kawa GTO 125, an odd pairing ,but a good day out .

I was coming home one day on my GTO, looked across the road, they was a Triumph, a BSA and another Brit bike all stood, I turned around, the Triumph had electrical problems, but It was ridden by a Dutch guy, he said he had a bike shop in Nonthaburi, just north of Bangkok,I still have his card ,somewhere specializing  in Britsh bikes, this was 10 years ago plus, is he still they . 

Daimler Dart. I restored one in the mid eighties , when based down Plymouth. Silky smooth engine. Went well if supercharged , in drag cars. What engines did "HOG SLAYER" use.

When 3 engines jest ain't enough .. 

As far as I know the lumps are copies of a Horex mid 50's twin ..

Never seen it before.

 

Why is it revered as an all time classic.

 

Seem trite, camp and pointless to me.

 

And what is the big deal about Brando.

 

He just look like a fat Serbian kid in a gay hat.

If you think that's bad, watch Giant. Or Roman Holiday, the plot of which is "beautiful people ride a Vespa around Rome" - it's a biker movie at heart.

 

Movies and TV used to be so mediocre - the only things really worth watching were Shakespeare productions and I Love Lucy.

Tells me everything about you, that you've only just watched a film made in 1953, and that was banned in the UK until the late 60's.

With nothing but snarky one liners.

Yes, even 30 years ago it was a corny movie.

In 1953 it was shock & horror.

And it scared the mainstream. The squares.

It is indeed a cult movie.

It is based on a true event in Hollister, California in 1947.

I doubt you've heard of that either.

Cut a long story short, Hollister (and the AMA's reply) was basically the start of the back patch & 1%er scene.

 

That is why this movie was so important.

As for Brando (who was huge at the time), uttering that immortal line "whatya got?" after being asked the question "hey Johnny, whatya rebelling against?".

Classic. Just classic.

The guy who had this built was a German guy (Werner?) who was Germany's equivalent to the UK's Paul Sample who penned the brilliant Ogri.

He did some great comic strips too, one of which was a couple of dudes (Brosl?) riding Guzzi cafe racers always being chased by the cops. Superb.

 Anyhow, those Horex motors were popular (cult bikes) back then in Chermany and i believe are twin port singles.

The Porsche Killer was a bike in one of his comics too.

The Red Porsche Killer you show was built in the late 80's i seem to remember, using a 4 speed Harley box and was built as a bet to indeed out drag a Porsche 911, using a "Horex motorcycle". I doubt the rules of the bet stated how many motors he could use....

They did make a parallel twin (unit construction?), but it did not have the following or popularity of the singles.

The name has been revived in the last decade and they make quite an interesting, decent looking, high end narrow angle V6 these days.

Just googled Werner.

I was wrong.

The cartoon character was/is called Werner, and the writer is called Brosel.

There is Werner tv, a Revell kit of the RPK, and the guy is still supremely popular in Germany and several of his comics are translated into English.

Recommended if you like Ogri to check him out.

Yeah I've seen the Horex V6 and nice machine it is .. The engine mimicks the VW design as far as I'm aware with the cylinders staggered which keeps it compact and allows just one cylinder head .. And they've done a good job styling it ..

Top end of Horex V6 lump .. This differs from the VW in having 3 valves a cyl whilst VeeDub has 4 .. The H uses 3 camshafts , one to open the single exhaust valve ( nearest in pic ) and the 2 inlets get a cam' each because if their alignment to the bore .. 

Piston from a narrow angle V6 .. The slope correspond's to the angle of the Vee in this case 15 degree's so that the combustion chamber remains a uniform even space as the piston starts compressing the charge ..

Addendum to above .. Central camshaft also opens 3 exhaust valves ( lobes high lighted in red ) ..

My thoughts exactly.  Gave up the booze a number of years ago, but it'll be a toss up as to whether the biking or the bonking does me in first.

A V6 with 3 valves / cylinder would have 18 valves. I count 12 in your pic. Does  it not have the central cam only operating the ( 6 ) ? inlet valves. The 6 exhaust valves / ports being on the outside of each bank of cylinders.

Yes sorry that photo doesn't show it that well .. Here's another with all the exhaust valve lobes in red and inlet blue ..

A very good acquaintance of mine, who has more skill and taste in his little finger than i do in my whole body.

His rather brainless sidekick was called Malcolm and his dog was called Kickstart, and yes that is where my TV name come from, I use to have a cat called Kickstart.

No joke, up to last year  I had a almost compleat set of Bike magazines from the 70's in a storeroom at my flat ,until the flat management decided that it was all illegal for flat leas holders to store stuff  in the storeroom, which was basically an oddball corner of the block of flats and under BS  health and safety  and insurance it all had to go ,and I had to foot the  bill .

So, if anyone finds on E-Bay a set of 1970's Bike magazines for sale, you know where they come from .
