A tense standoff took place in the middle of a busy Krabi intersection yesterday morning after a man took his wife hostage.

The man Sayan, 48, had taken his wife Areerat, 47, hostage in a Toyota Vios around 9am.

Areerat is a teacher of Chinese language at a downtown Krabi school, reported Sanook.

The provincial police chief Maj Gen Bunthawee Joraksa was on the scene with other high ranking officials.

Earlier it is believed that Sayan shot his wife in the leg in the car. A police checkpoint was set up to intercept them but the driver burst through.

The standoff was happening at the intersection near the Neua Klong market.

Relatives were called to try and reason with Sayan to give himself up.

More about this as we hear of it.

Seems an odd choice of words.

I take it she was in the car with her leg? Or is she an amputee who left the leg in the car for safe-keeping?
