Quote from article:

“The good news is that the survey showed that expats may own their own rooms, houses and vehicles making the need for rent unnecessary.

So for some ThaiVisa readers, rent is unnecessary, because they sleep in (or on) their own vehicle. Good news indeed!

A lot of foreigners rent their vehicles while they are in Thailand.

Well, I didn't. Good point about wife having a government employment though.

Currently paying just over 100k baht for mine, but realise that as time goes on it is a necessary "evil".

I'm so busy at work I bet I only spend 20+ a month. That includes rent, utilities for central BKK flat and all monthly expenses. 2L scotch, imported steaks and one expensive sushi dinner for two pm. Wife pays for her incidentals. I often pick up things for her.

Does not include clothes, dental, medical services or holidays.

I'm so busy I really would have a hard time spending more. I guess we'd eat more sushi, live in a nicer place although the location here is great.

Being single or with kids is very expensive. Women many rent as girlfriends $$$

What is central to you?

Nothing in "central" that is decent is less then 20k rent.

Is your flat or studio I assume a motorbike ride down Soi from Oh Nuts?

If you own your cars, and pay a Thai rent for your home, do not drink much, you do have health insurance, do not travel too much, your GF or wife do not need luxury maintenance, and do not have kids or relatives to take care, 25000 thb its is more than enough to have a good life in many small towns in Thailand. But for Bangkok, Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phuket, Chiang Mai, and few more.... multiply X 2. If you try the same life in Califiornia...multiply for 5.

  Cali? X 10, more like. ????
I suppose I am one of those "rich" expats, because I have more than the 65,000/month required for a retirement extension.
I have also been hospitalized three times in one year. Once for a stroke, and twice for cellulitis. A little tight for a bit, because insurance covers nothing but accidents or cancer.  Everything else is "pre-existing", so I am essentially self insured.
No probs there, as the co-pays alone would have bankrupted me in the US, even with my medicare. One hospitalization already did, about ten years ago,
If I were healthier I could be content on 40,000. 7,000 covers rent and utilities, and I buy about 3,000 baht worth of food, and usually cook at "home". I spend on, or give to, my GF average about 30,000 baht. My choice. No buffaloes, but she does have a very sweet, and frail, 93 year old dad. My own parents have passed on, so I have no difficulty helping my new "dad", ????
Shank's mare or songtaews have daily transport covered.
It's a wonderful life.
I wish my 75 rai in AZ was worth what it would be here, then I would have the $1,000,000 in assets back home mentioned earlier. As long as Mr. Trump does not manage to crash the entire US economy I should be OK for life here.

Cheap travel, a lower cost of living and warmer weather, not to mention fun and games are reason enough for poorer individuals to settle themselves in Thailand. Around an estimated 25% at the tight end? Yes, OK.

Well, we call it "Tinglish", with variations of spelling. Would that be "Tinnish", then?
Hope you find humor, and not insult in that. ????
I appreciate what our suomalaiset friend says. Not much of a boozer myself, though one or two beers a week are a treat for me.
I have been something of a hobbyist myself, but just cannot do some of it anymore. I have built a number of houses, barns, even a couple of small observatories. Health considerations keep me off of ladders anymore, never mind wielding a nail gun or framing hammer.
In the US I have, or had, a collection of antique clocks. Cannot see well nor perform fine manipulation any more: stroke. I think that probably works against playing with the ladies, too.
I could use a government wife in the health care end, but will not give up my 51 YO darling for that concern.

You are wrong. I have too much going on in Thailand, that you will someday perhaps find out about, if you visit museums and art galleries.

You left out all the incredible Temples?

45k a month isn't a lot, but if you are not frivolous and don't have too many bills then it's perfectly doable...even if you have a house payment of like 12-15k a month and are married/in a relationship and it would be even better if she earns too. Problem is, when you start having to send kids to school plus house plus car plus the in-laws etc. and the wife doesn't work. Personally, I think about 60k baht a month is the sweet spot, for the not rich types, if you want a fair level of existence and you are asking for an amount that you can live on OK here...but it can easily be done for less if you are happy to cut some corners and not be too worried about some things.
