CityNews – Police have issued a crackdown on beggars in Chiang Mai.

After news broke out earlier this week concerning beggars who were allegedly terrifying passersby on the street, police have decided to initiate a crackdown.

Oh My! So bad for Thailand's image. As long as they are free and Thai, what's the big deal.

Go back to early 2000's and you could be at Chang Puak gate about 10.30 and watch 2 pick up trucks of "Hill Tribe" beggers arrive.

They would get off organize, distribute babies the set out for a days begging around CM. I was assured by one guy who lived in Mae Rim that they where local to there.

I've given handouts to people obviously living in poverty,  but they were not engaged in the act of begging . They acted surprised as hell but grateful. Organised begging makes me suspicious that some ass hat organizer is sitting around some bar waiting on the payout. Same thing for monks now too.

The old lady in the photo looks terrifying ?,

If she is genuinely destitute how is she

going to live,cannot beg,and officials

stealing money meant for the poor.

Crackdown on the poor again.....but never the gangs that "manage" these poor souls!

Some whining mamby pamby has a hissy fit; consequently, the poor are deprived of income.

most all of these so called beggars work for a company and are not able to keep most of what they collect.. it is a scam of the lowest levels... but i also seem to recall reading these beggars needed to be licensed now and report where they park their butts to beg.. i guess that got forgotten by everyone already

Used to watch it myself back then.  I knew one old lag who was way past child rearing age who had a pitch from Top North down to the bottom of Moonmuang who had a different sleeping/drugged baby strapped to her back each day.

The BIB eventually cleared them out.

Ah,  another justification for not giving to those less fortunate than oneself?            ?

Most 'begging' in Chiang Mai is organized begging.  Good to see it being cleaned up.

I lived in the downtown area for years.  Same faces at the same places nightly; different children placed with 'destitute' mothers.  And the tourists quite literally feeding the scam.
If you live in the area among Thais long enough, you learn who the truly needy really are.  It's the 80 year old elderly lady just making ends meet without help from her family; it's the mentally challenged guy fending for himself on the street.  And the fiscally challenged Thais I've met don't beg.  They work odd jobs, they stay fed and keep a roof over their heads.  Those 'destitute' beggars aren't even from around the downtown areas.  They don't live there.  It's a form of human trafficking that is 'fed' by the good-will of ignorant tourists and foreigners.  It's a scam.  And a lucrative one too.  Good riddance.

Most begging is organised by Khun X.

I now only make a donation if I see Thai nationals doing so.

The Thai folk know who are genuine and who are part of a scam praying on western mugs.
