The authorities have checked and closed 239 small hotels, hostels and guest houses in Krabi's Mueang district during the past month for having no licences for the provision of hotel services.

Krabi deputy governor Apinan Puekphong on Tuesday said police, troops, provincial and municipality officials had joined forces to check hotel services in the district and found that only 52 out of 318 places inspected had licences for operating such services.

He said 239 had been temporarily shut down pending their licence applications.

To get a licence, the owners must comply with the hotel business law to provide proper safety measures for guests, he added.

The owners of the 239 illegal hotel businesses have been sued for contravening the law, with 199 of them already having been convicted and the rest still being tried, the deputy governor said.

It’s about time for that cleanup! Now do the same with restaurants in tourist areas. For those who want to continue their small business, apply for a license and follow the requirements. Ain’t that hard.

They seem determined to "eradicate" any and every sort of small enterprise the normal everyday person could own...in favour of ? Some international /hi-so family owned business !

...boring comment. Face the Reality: No Licence, no Business.

Anything wrong with proving safety measures for the guests? Instead of the usual don't care as long as we make money attitude?

The government requires FULL compliance by 2021. The 2016 amendment to the Hotel Act has already closed many businesses and with a Hotel Licence virtually impossible to obtain this will soon affect thousands of travellers and businesses.

Fully agreed that regulations need to be followed but a hotel licence is virtually impossible to get.

Nothing to do with safety when the same premises they are closing for no licence can rent for 30 day minimum, without a licence.

The hotel act amendment of 2016 requires full compliance within 5 years. Under the legal framework this licence is virtually impossible to get for most.

Don't forget the "officials' forking in from their friendly assistance to avoid further penalties or demolition.

What normal country had guesthouses with no licenses no insurance? A business with properly licensed and insured  facilities has no reason to bribe officials and local cops, a step in the elimination of corruption!

Yes, some of the "charm" of staying in a third world dump will go too, it is called progress.

The next destination will always beckon the adventurous.. Africa anybody?

Thailand should attract a higher quality of tourist who won't tolerate such accommodations

not odorous backpackers, and prostitution Dross!
