Question about gold

According to a neighbour that bought gold in Australia, she is accused of wearing false gold as it doesn't look like Thai gold. Is this the case and what is the difference in price and quality?

Thai gold is 23 karat, western gold isn't

There are countries where you can buy 9 karat gold (37,5 % gold). Other countries don't allow something to be sold as gold if the percentage isn't more than 50%, the minimum there is 14 karat (58% gold) followed by 18 karat (75% gold). Thai gold is 96.6% gold.
