Burning dry landscape stuff

Featured Replies

I live in saraphi. My house is on 1 Raí with only a few neighbour's. Is it legal for me to burn leaves.. Tree branches and such? There is trash pickup but I assume they don't want 10 bags of landscape stuff?

Not a very clear answer. That doesn't answer my question. Is it illegal to burn landscape materials? If so.. then is it normal for the materials to be picked up at the street with my normal refuse?

trash collection is not the same everywhere in Chiang Mai so can not answer

Give it a couple months and everyone will be at it. Wait till then and you can join in and feel like a true local.

Just burn it, who gives a shit.

The trash collectors don't mind what's in the black bags as long as they have your local amphoe logo printed on it.
Spending 80 THB for 10 trash bags is 100 times better than poisoning the environment and harm your neighbors.

Casual observation locally would suggest it is illegal to burn leaves. The neighbors fill the rubbish bins with garden waste and burn the plastic.

Interesting comments about the legality of burning waste. Here in rural Issan garden bonfires are a regular occurrence along with the burning of sugar cane fields, especially at the night, during harvesting. Waste from the harvesting of rice is also burnt. The smell of smoke can be quite nauseating and the law is disregarded.

You are living on 1 rai land, make  a compostpile  in a corner. You can use the compost to fertilize your other plants.

Everyone around me burns with no legal repercussions so have at it.

Legal or illegal?!

Just ask yourself if you prefer the smoke smell inside your garden and house when your neighbours wanna do same you do.

Why not search for a natural way to dispose it like a compost heap. You can use it for your garden again.

Around me all the Thais burn they tell me they can but I can’t do if I have stuff they will burn for me TIT

It is illegal and not a nice way to live also. We live on four rai with no neighbors but we do not do it.

There are much better ways and cleaner ways of disposing of these things as other posters have outlined.

Just because others know no better, no need to follow the pack.

Dear 1hk,

Maintaing your property becomes a balance.

Living in suburban Auckland, smoking fires are frowned upon and attendance by Fire department is almost guaranteed.

I invested in a garden shredder for small branches and foliage which makes compostibility easy, and thus beneficial to the rest of the garden.

I do have a "domestic" chainsaw that enables me to reduce tree limbs to sizeable cuts for burning after dry seasoning so smoke is all but negated.

My suburban garden gets numerous praises from passersby, however the real benefit is the vegetables and fruit we produce.for ourselves.

Slash and Burn, I think is outdated and some serious thought needs to be addressed within the whole of Asia.

Its sa pitty many thais just burning their trash and polluting the air and bother their neighbours. So as we are coming from a more developed country to solve trash problems we should show to thais a better way and not burn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the helpful replies. One in particular was interesting.. The need to buy rubbish bags from the amphur.. They have the town logo.. Interesting.. I'll ask if these are available here..

Lots of people still use wood for cooking or for starting their charcoal cooking fires.  Finding someone to give it to should not be too hard.

When in Rome......  On aserious note, I wouldn't worry about it. Do it early mornings, and I mean early. and make sure the fire is not smoldering but burning with a proper flame. No one would care about it.

PS. I like the size of your plot.

Cr@p idea.  Early morning smoke just lingers.  Leaves here produce a lot of smoke.  Best to burn (actually, best NOT to burn) in early afternoon if there's a breeze to clear the air.  But best to compost.
