Hey Terry, did you have any involvement in the Julimar fires?

My folks live there and they were ordered to evacuate, and told to expect to lose their farm. Luckily the fire didn't pass their fece, ccording to my old man it onl got to within 10 metres of his fence.

Were you there mate?

Check out my old man's fire fighting kit...and then the size of the fire behind it.

They seem to be getting worse Miggy, when I was a kid we didn't have bush fires like this. I grew up in this area (country bumpkin) and we were subjected to floods. I remember one year in particular we could not go to school for around 2 weeks because the engineers could not certify the bridge as safe after a particularly bad flood, now we are experiencing drought...

yes the drought problem seems to be an issue all over australia as well? or atleast thats the impression I get...cos if I hear about water shortage in Sydney..being the capital (well kinda) then I begin to wonder how they will manage out in the bush.....

a bit worrying no?

Hi Tuky, I grew up in the South West and I remember helping put out grass fires

around Wokelup and Benger and having to take refuse in an irrigation channel..

I really feel for the professional firemen & women, often risking life and limb..

Bush fires are definitely no fun, Glad to hear your folks are fine..LBD..

Maybe its my memory but these bush fires seem to get worse each year, were their any casualties on this one?

Looks like you got a lucky break Tuky, or more to the point your family, I guess you would get by without your inheritance, but family, well that is another matter.

Good luck

Moss

Good blessings for your family, Tuky. Can't imagine the horror of it, wondering if the fire is going to take your home and fearing for your lives. Even with the fire at that distance from the house in your photos, the air must be choked of oxygen. I know what that's like from forest fires in Canada. Hearing the cries of animals who could not escape is horrible.

Got a pm from Terry; he is working long shifts and really tired. I'll let him tell you the story.

I worry about him, but he knows his job, so all we can do is offer up a prayer and keep bashing him when he graces our presence on TV.

got to tell you tuky its been a crazy few weeks in perth, surrounding suburbs and country, for bush fires.

we have had a heat wave that hit perth and just hung in there for 5 days and the temps ranged from 39 to 42 deg in the city.

some country areas hit 45 deg. :D

im a 28 year veteran firefighter and its been the worst stretch of consistantly hot weather we have had for years. its not unusual for perth to hit 40 deg in summer but its only for a day or 2 and then its back into the 30's.

to make things worse weve had an arsonist starting fires and this has stretched our perms and volunteers to the limit making things incredibly difficult to deal with.

the fires ringed the city for a few days there, and we had a place called dwellingup ( country town outside perth ) virtually come within a klm of being destroyed. thanks to the big effort from the boys they managed to save the town but lost 11 houses and one young schoolteacher was killed in a car accident trying to out run the fire.

this town was totally destroyed by fire in 1962 so you can imagine what was going on in the minds of the old timers.

it took 4 days to bring this one under control and things have quietened down around perth as well.

us permanents work 2 days of 10 hours and then 2 nights of 14 hours followed by 4 days off shift, but over the periods of these fires most were pulling extra shifts and i got to tell you, the boys were a bit knackered.

but tuky,

cricky's mate,

it will be all good when im back in the mighty los in may and having a lager with my good mate dave and if you want you can join us. :D

glad to here your family is safe and to anybody who thinks this is a hero story, its not, as its the reality of dealing with bush fire within australia. :D

Ah, Terry, what a guy. You are my little bro hero. :o Thanks for the update and hope you get some rain.

Thanks for that Terry, I well remember the guttering of Dwellingup..

I think the Reg and Volunteers do a great job during summer in OZ.

Certain people who make comments about hero stories should try doing the Firefighters job.

Perhaps they will show a bit more Respect and decency toward people who risk their lives..

I think the Australian Firefighters do a great job and If I'm not mistaken didn't a heap of

Canadian Firefighters fly over to help out in Victoria recently??

We may joke about your big hose mate but I for one couldn't do your job.. LBD.. :o

I fell in love with firefighters when I was but a young lass. Staying at my sister's for a week and decided to make cookies. Ten minutes into the baking process, the oven starts smoking. Open the door and the flames are shooting up like Dante's Inferno. Closed the door. Shut off the gas. Call the fire department and ask them who I should call. Duh. Had to look outside for the house number. Five minutes later, I hear sirens and a fire chief car, ambulance and two shiny red fire trucks pull up. And I had no makeup on. The boys strolled in, checked the stove, which had settled down, and all the gas mains. Then asked if I was the lady who didn't know her own address. Duh. I offered them cookies, burnt on the outside, raw in the middle. Very handsome boys.

Mice? I wish. The tresses are on a little black duck binge at the mo. Have smelly rubbery yellow webbed toes sticking out all over and I have to see my broker today. Babushka? Helmet? Umbrella? Call in quacked?

Can I have my Galoshes Back Please Miss Grog on.. :o

Sorry, kicked off on the way down. I got enough problems without having to pick up after you and your quirk of quackers. Check the backyard.

Now that there Tel is an awful hard day job, but to do it at night as well, well my hat goes off to you and your colleagues, but keep yours on, eh.

And when you are back in the LOS make sure you keep an eye on your mate DT.
