Test results received on Friday morning have confirmed that the stray dog which attacked a 19-day-old infant on Wednesday at her home in Tambon Than Poon's Moo 2 village of Nakhon Si Thammarat's Chalerm Phrakiat district, had rabies.

The provincial livestock development office declared the area a temporary rabies epidemic zone.

Officials are closely monitoring the village and have given out 26 rabies jabs, including to the severely wounded girl's relatives and rescue workers who were exposed to the girl's wounds.

Residents have raised concerns about other members of the pack of stray dogs that the rabid dog belonged to and called on the authorities to act.

The epidemic zone will be watched for six months and measures will be implemented to contain and eradicate the disease, including the vaccination of at least 80 per cent of cats and dogs in the zone, said livestock office head Thanawat Pansanid.

Investigations have confirmed that the rabid dog had also bitten five puppies in the neighbourhood, resulting in their deaths, before it entered the infant's house, killing a pet cat then attacking the girl who was asleep in a hammock in the hall, while her 17-year-old mother was cleaning dishes in the kitchen.

The infant remains in a critical condition.

So for all the do gooders on the other thread  blowing out their hypercritical front teeth against the poisoning of Soi dogs,  then maybe it is your turn next.  Poetic justice it would be for sure.  Human life is far more important that feral dogs in my book.  But still what comes round goes round and about time this wonderful nation wakes up to the dangers

When pigs, sheep and cows get far less dangerous diseased they are all culled to prevent spread. Should this be different?

I'd like to see a bounty offered up, say 5 bt a head?

That's just plain ridiculous - an expensive. Seems to be a lot of immigrant workers that would do it for a free meal.

Probably wouldn't seem so ridiculous if it was your granddaughter that was chewed up by a rabid dog. If it had been mine, I'd pony up 100K myself. You could offset the costs by forcing all dog owners (that keep their pets under control) to pay 2000bt for registration/tagging. Those running around with no designated tags would be fair game for the bounty.

Yep the baby started Crying and that upset the Mut,,,, What is Wrong/Right with this Country,,,Exterminate the Vermin Soi dogs.

Feral dogs are simply a public health problem. It is high time Thailand grasped the nettle on this issue, as far to many children are attacked and far too many motorbike accidents are caused by unowned soi dogs. It has got to the point in most places that you can't even go for a daily walk because of the roads teeming with these monsters.

Just what is needed for the Thai Government, and the Citizens of Thailand to manage the problem of street dogs that are full of disease.

Here we now has a baby attacked by a Soi dog , and in critical condition, and still it will be a merit making thing to do for people to carry on feeding these crazed dogs.

Its a sick society that values the life of a diseases ridden animal over that of a child.

No action further, just wait and see. Wouldnt it be a good time, idea, action to collect the stray dogs?

What does the "Save the Soi Dogs" charity have to say about this?

Apparently nothing, they seem to be very quite when humans gets almost killed by their beloved street dogs.

Since when are soi dogs considered livestock?

Anyway I think Mr Thanawat should be replaced with someone who has at least a half brain.

Another rather confusing title.  Isn't an infant dog a puppy?  Incidentally, who or what did the infant dog attack?  Just curious.
