Thai people who invested in a language school in Lampang have gone to the media after they were ripped off for millions of baht.

The victims had invested in an AEC affiliated language school set up in Prajao Thanjai Road in Muang district.

The AEC is the Asean Economic Community - Thai people have been encouraged to learn more English to catch up with some of their neighbors.

The victims said they responded to a leaflet campaign for investors hoping to make money. Some put in several hundreds of thousands of baht.

Some 50 students were left high and dry when the school shut its doors. They had paid 500 baht each to study English.

The Muang Lampang police have issued an arrest warrant for the owner named only as Jiraphat, 41.

Jiraphat has fled abroad with some of the proceeds of the investment in the school.

Ten people led by former teacher Phimporn, 73, went to the Thai media yesterday to press the police into following up on charges.

Sanook said in their headline that Jiraphat is believed to have fled abroad with half a million baht.

I wonder if 73-year-old former teacher Phimporn and I would have been able to have a basic chat in English, were I ever to visit Lampang.

I wonder what exactly all the ripped off students were likely to have gotten for their 500 baht tuition.

I also wonder what exactly is an "AEC affiliated" language school, and even if there is actually such a thing?

Shame of it is that no doubt some students are out of pocket after really trying to do a good thing for themselves by learning English.    Hope they catch the conman who legged it abroad but with only 500000 baht it won't last long.  As for the investors, well no doubt some were genuine and I am sorry they lost some money but I am sure many of the investors were just hoping to make a quick buck at the expense of others so then that's poetic justice.

Damn it.  why do they have to go to the police to file charges?  Isn't there a court system there through which they can file civil suits?  And is there not some sort of District attorney office that could file criminal charges like theft, embezzelment etc?
