Koh Tao alleged rape investigation: Big Joke says woman investigator to be sent to England

The Royal Thai Police said Saturday that a selection process would be held this week to choose an appropriate female investigator to travel to England to interview the woman who claims she was raped on Koh Tao.

And they have accepted they may have been looking in the wrong spot.

Pol Maj-Gen Surachate Hakpan -  known as Big Joke who earlier suggested that he would be travelling to England himself - said that the British Embassy and authorities in England had requested that a woman go to the UK.

He said that conducting an interview and investigation outside Thailand was a "difficult" matter but that the foreign authorities had faith and confidence in the RTP that it would be handled properly.

The UK authorities appreciated the Thai police work in investigating the allegations while there was no formal report made by the alleged victim, he said.

Daily News did not comment if this all meant that Maj-Gen Surachate would not be going to the UK himself.

The alleged victim - now said to be 20 - claimed that she was drugged and raped on the island in June. An initial visit by Surachate to the island turned up no evidence but it now turns out he may have been looking in the wrong place.

In response to questions that the previously discredited online group "CSI LA" had said that Surachate went to the wrong site of the alleged rape he said that his investigation followed the comments of the mother of the victim in statements to the UK media.

Whether this was in fact the spot where the alleged crime took place is a matter in the continuing investigation.

The Maj-Gen reiterated that if a crime took place those responsible would be prosecuted and if it had been made up then similarly those who lied must be held accountable.

the sensible thing to do. Looks like proper police work.

I guess independent British witnesses (police, lawyer e.g.) will be present during the interview which would make it more trustworthy

sending a female officer is not a bad idea IMO.

i really cannot see how they can get a prosecution from this but at least they are following it up.

thought he might send his sidekick who has disappeared recently, at least she speaks english having went to uni there.

Yes I agree it is a good idea to do the interviewing. But I am sure the selected person will have been first indoctrinated with Prawit's and Big Joke's take on the investigation. Meaning she will go there with a preconceived opinion.

No doubt she will have an entourage of RTP officers to help see her through this ordeal. More non-paying seats on Thai Airways.

Wasn't there a suicide on the island recently of a influential well off buisnesman. If the female investigator thinks she maybe telling the truth want to bet they somehow try to involve him as the previous rapes and murders were pointing towards persons well off connected to heads of the island mafia. Would take the pressure off them. Put the suicide down to feeling guilty and ending it.

How exactly was this determined? 'Foreign authorities' aren't stupid and will be fully aware of the Thai Police's reputation. And, it is not a good reputation.

Nothing determined, it's just something that Hakpan said, and unless he has a certified letter from those foreign authorities stating what he said, then he did commit crime by publishing fake news an the internet...

I read the police were looking based off where 'The Sun Newspaper' reported it as happening. Great detective work there, boys.

I never accused anyone of lying in this story. All I asked is that there's a proper investigation. I was told by a few members that there was one done. Evidently, there was not.

Where are our members who believe the girl to be lying based off hearsay and poor investigation skills? When it comes to the RTP, some people will never learn.

The back peddlers will be along soon in an attempt to discredit her in other ways to save face........ironically

well when you have cases such as this you can't blame the rtp for being sceptical, there's been a few false allegations on the islands this year from wasted girls

What a load of BS, big joke wont go, sending a woman to take the fall, bloody coward.

If they can prove no rape took place the joke will step forward and grab the credit, saying i was correct in what i said.

Now if it goes the other way, he will have a scapegoat.

Still not convinced any Thai cop is going and if they do will the girl talk to them, we'll wait and see.

seems it is being coordinated between thai and UK authorities so i would assume the girl has agreed to talk to them

Yes we know that, but the joke was spouting off about going, not like him to back off.

When the RTP went to Germany there were 13 of them, so a woman going alone not the usual scenario.

doubt she will go alone. BJ said originally he would go and the uk would have said we use females to do interviews in these circumstances so please send a girl instead. she would be interviewed i suspect by the thai copper in front of specialist uk coppers.
