The Culture Ministry’s first international art festival, the upcoming “Thailand Biennale 2018” in Krabi, will represent the biggest collaboration between the public and private sectors under the government’s “Pracharat” policy.

“The Bt100-million art festival is funded and engaged in by over 50 governmental and private agencies. It’s the biggest ‘Pracharat’ project concerning art so far that the ministry has organised, involving thousands of officials and local people,” Culture Minister Vira Rojpojchanarat said at a press conference on Monday at the Andaman Cultural Centre in Krabi.

“Thailand Biennale”, which will be held under the theme “Edge of the Wonderland”, will feature nearly 60 contemporary artists from 24 countries who have created “site-specific” artworks at seven main islands, beaches and communities.

The four-month festival will open on November 2 with a grand parade involving 3,000 locals and artists. It runs to February 28.

The festival aims to promote the government’s “Pracharat” policy by generating money for locals, boosting tourism and upgrading the Thai contemporary art scene onto the global stage.

“Beside the governmental initiation, local participation is also the key factor to make this event happen,” said Krabi’s governor, Lt-Colonel ML Kitibodee Pravitra.

“We are so excited to be the friendly hosts of this first international art festival in Krabi. The city is upgrading local transportation and safety security by using high technology,” he added.
