Nakhon Sawan villagers call for help as village flooded for more than a month

Residents of a village in Nakhon Sawan's Muang district complained on Friday that they have been ignored by authorities for more than a month since their houses were flooded.

 

Residents of 87 houses in Ban Huay Hin in Tambon Phra Non said their village has been flooded by waters from Boraphet Lake.

 

They said the water was about 30 to 50 centimetres deep and was becoming polluted and giving off a foul smell.

 

They said the road to the village was also flooded and villagers needed to use boats to travel.

 

They complained that none of government agencies provided help and some families were in urgent need of drinking water.

It's a good thing the houses are built on stilts.

The help they need is someone tell them to move to higher ground. Deliberately building a house in a flood plain and demanding help when it floods is stupid.

Nice photo - reminds me of the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. Perhaps some local entrepreneur could offer sightseeing trips by boat.

That is why Thai houses were built that way to start with.

 

The ongoing floods could well be the result of infrastructure built elsewhere and blocking the natural drainage flow.

 

When builders do their job they rarely take into account of the area around them and build access roads over existing drainage but fail to provide new tunnels to allow the water to drain away.

 

It happens all over the country and there is not enough high ground for everyone to build on.

 

Suvannabhumi airport is built on a flood plane and Bangkok itself is sinking. What do you suggest that the government does about that?

Construct all new buildings in Bangkok and extensions at Suvarnabhumi on stilts - might ease traffic problems.

The PM has long forgotten about you people. He is busy dealing with other important issues like the illegal feeding of pigeons. 

These people should take up their cause on the social pages of the internet where it is widely read and people sit up and take notice. I suggest they remind the PM that flooded also vote people and that his neglect of them will not be forgotten. That might catch his attention.

The foundation piles would have to be very large and strong to support an 80 or 90 story tower block.

I agree it happens all over the country, but disagree it's because there is not enough high ground. In this case it would have been so easy for the village to be back a little further from the rim of the lake. It's "mai pen rai" / "don't think too much" at its worst. Perhaps they should have thought about the decision a little more as they are obviously not prepared for the consequences of their decision.

Do you know how long the village has been established there? I don't. It is quite possible that the original village relied on fishing for its main economy.

Could be and villagers like living close together. Looks by the style of the houses they all were very aware they were building in a flood plain. This year 87 houses flooded. 20 years ago maybe there was 3. Next year maybe there will be 100. It's like an ever more menacing gang demanding people pay for their mistakes.  I would only give assistance to help people relocate to safer ground. But of course that won't fly and instead everyone must feel sorry for them and assist them year after year. I hate to see government waste when there are so many worthier people who are truly in need.

Building houses on stilts was the older way of doing it, and it is done in a similar way today except that the bottom is now walled in to make extra rooms in the house.

 

It may well be only a few distinct families and inter marriages between the rest.
