Atm Machines Not Working

Featured Replies

Although I have a Thai bank account, I sometimes use my English atm card to draw money from back home. For the last two days, all the machines are saying my card is no good. I have spoken to my bank and they say everything is OK.

My friend who relys on his card to draw his pension from England says his card is not working and phoned to England and got the same reply. (different banks by the way).

I have spoken to three other people, and their cards are not working either.

Does anybody know whats going on!

I had the same problem until yesterday when it was ok, the only thing I did differently was to give the card chip a good polish on my shirt whether that made any difference or not who knows.

Back in December my sister and her husband visited from England and their Barclay's bank cards wouldn't work - although my sister was successful once, but not again.

Then he phoned Barclays in the UK., and they told him that there was a 'stop' on UK cards at ATM machines in Thailand due to fraud. After he spoke to them, Barclays released the 'stop' and thereafter they both obtained cash with no further problems.

My brother, his wife, his daughter and her husband, also came to Thailand and used their UK bank cards with no problems. So it seems to affect some and not others. I even tried mine (Barclays) and it worked.

I suggest that the folk in question phone their bank and speak to someone who deals with their account - not just a general enquiry.

I believe you can always draw money from inside the banks, using your visa card and sometimes a personal cheque.

I get the ATM problems that appear to be due to connection problems between the atm and the banks. The following day the card works fine.

Slightly off topic, a few friends have been having problems internet banking with Lloyds and a couple of other UK banks. Phonecalls to the banks indicate the problems may be caused by Internet Explorer 7.

I have had the same problem with my Barclay connect card sometimes it works and other times it does not. I called Barclays and they said that everything looked ok so to try again. They did mention at the time that there was a lot of ATM fraud in Bangkok, so to check the ATM for a hidden reader. I tried again without success but the following day it was ok. I travel ouside Thailand regularly and i never have this problem, so i think that this does point to the large amount of ATM fraud in and around Bangkok.

Cheers, Rick

Try at an ATM located at a bank, sometimes it is a phoneline/internet problem.

Naka.
