September 29, 20187 yr I am looking at relocating permanently to Chiang Mai. Can anyone help me find respectable domestic help. I would prefer live-in because I am a business owner in the US and will have to hold odd hours. Any help or guidance would be great!
September 30, 20187 yr Popular Post Rich, some people on this forum have domestic help/maids. Those that do may be one resource for your search as their maids have friends or relatives that are looking for work. With that in mind, you should give them a little more information about yourself and what would be required of the person you employ as a maid. 1. Do you speak Thai or do you require the employee to speak English? (English speaking maids are very hard to find). 2. What area do you plan of living or live in? (Some employees don't want to live and work too far away from their friends or relatives). 3. Will you be living alone or will you have your family with you and if so how many children? (Most maids would like to know ahead of time what their work load will be). 4. Being that you are a business owner, this may not apply to you but just in case. Are you a person who is elderly or handicapped that requires assistance doing things for yourself at home? If you don't wish to post your answers here, feel free to PM me. I'm not in the business of finding domestic help for people but we have had four maids during the past 10 years and as they got married or moved on, we found they were a good source of finding a replacement each time. Like others on this forum that have maids, I could ask our maid if she knows anyone, but she would want to know the answers to the above questions in order to find one that would be agreeable to your needs.
September 30, 20187 yr We didn't find our maid, she found us. Our builder's niece moved to Pattaya and she helped us move house. Found that she was a really hard worker, so offered her more permanent employment. Didn't really need her but my wife appreciates her help and I appreciate the eye candy! Best way to find a local maid is to ask around Thai neighbours etc. Be prepared that you might have to give two or three a trial before you find the right one for you.
September 30, 20187 yr While I think Khun BarnicaleBob has posted almost all ye need to know, and asked you the context clarifying questions that are relevant ... yet, I dare to add: If you speak Thai, have lived in the Kingdom before, have a family ... my comments may not be relevant. 0. Consider staying in Chiang Mai a while in temporary accommodations until you get to know the city, get to know the real-estate market in the price-range you can afford, get to know the neighborhoods that your lifestyle (willingness, ability, to commute) may make attractive. 1. The choice of help, particularly live-in, is a critical one: get a neighbor, and very likely everyone in your neighborhood may know what you have (valuables), what you do, etc. I would try to, initially, use a temporary helper who does not live near you referred to you by someone you trust; for live-in, I'd look for a hill-tribe Christian woman with references. If you clarify your previous experience with Thailand a bit more, age, family, etc., I may be able to add a few comments. cheers, ~o:37;
September 30, 20187 yr Author Wow! Thank you so much and these are great suggestions. I guess I should have been more specific in my request but I am new here and wasn't sure what to write. I think these are all outstanding ideas and I believe I will use all of them. ???? Again, thank you.
September 30, 20187 yr Once you get settled in, ask around your moo-baan (subdivision or neighborhood) to see if anyone can recommend a relative of someone working for them. As mentioned, often a Christian hilltribe lady will have some English and be a little more trustworthy. There is a Christian online classified that I'm probably not permitted to mention here that often has ads from families leaving the area trying to find employment for their trusted housekeepers.
September 30, 20187 yr Author Hi BarnicleBob, You're absolutely correct! I should post this information. I do not speak Thai. I realize this is a hurdle but I will just have to struggle through it. I'm not real sure where I will ultimately end up in Chiang Mai. I have been looking at large homes north of the city in gated, secure neighborhoods. I will be living along. I'm divorced and do not have any children by choice. I currently have a cat and any advice or suggestions from the community on how to get her into the country would be great. I'm 52 and in good health. I'm pretty self sufficient. I'm looking for someone to help me in all capacities of adjusting and maintaining a large home. I have an extremely enticing budget for the right canidate for this position. This is NOT a housekeeper with benefits position and I would never consider that with anyone that works for me. In the states I own 3 large companies and employ over 700 people. I know my "P's & "Q's" in that department and it is not something that this candidate would have to be concerned about. I hope that this is some more information that will help me in this search.

September 30, 20187 yr If you send me a private message I might be able to put you in touch with a young Thai gentleman who is very honest , speaks reasonably English and has a proper housekeeping certificate from a Bangkok school training hotel staff for cruise ships with internships in upscale Bangkok hotels. He also does cooking - mostly Thai food but some Farang food as well. He recently mentioned to me that he wanted to relocate to Chiang Mai in the next few month.Sent from my iPhone using Thaivisa Connect
