Four years on Thai media remember Koh Tao rape murder of British tourists

Influential Thai media Thai Rath revisited the rape and murder of Hannah Witheridge and the murder of her friend David Miller on Koh Tao's Sairee beach in September of 2014.

Four years have passed since the murders of the 24 year old that caused uproar in Thailand and throughout the world.

Many claim that two Burmese migrants arrested on October 2nd of that year were just scapegoats.

The real culprit was the son of the Phu Yai Ban - it was claimed especially online.

Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Htun - known colloquially as the B2 - have sat on death row for several years.

Their lawyer  Nakorn Chompuchart still holds out hope of getting them freed.

At the time of their arrest the then national police chief General Somyot Phumphangmuang said:

"The investigation has been transparent. There are no scapegoats".

He said science and DNA was the proof.

Others claim money was paid to keep the son of an influential person from facing justice.

The debate continues to rage four years after the slayings on September 15th of 2014 though the Thai Rath video contained nothing new.

Tourists should stay away for this reason above any else. Stop visiting the islands and you put the cop mafia out of business overnight.

From the screenplay for Casablanca (1942):

Major Strasser: ... I advise that this place be shut up at once.
Renault: But everybody's having such a good time.
Strasser: Yes, much too good a time. The place is to be closed.
Renault: But I've no excuse to close it!
Strasser: Find one

Disgraceful, I would Never go there or allow my Children  or Family

Yes but it doesn't seem that that the mostly young people who still go there are likely interested in asking some grandfather-type where they should spend their vacation.

This is the worst miscarriage of justice I have seen in my 14 years here.feel so bad for those Burmese kids

I agree but as a retired forensic expert (Biology) living in Thailand I must make no further comment - the Computer Crimes Act.

Yes you are correct but most of them probably have little knowledge of the islands history , all the more reason to keep repeating it.

Many might not care , but better an informed decision rather than one based on ignorance.

That will be the DNA on the murder weapon then, of two different people, neither of whom were the Burmese. And the DNA evidence was ripped apart by the country's leading expert on the matter. Verdict was disgraceful. This story should never be allowed to die away, all the time those lads are in jail.

Is the leading expert you refer to Dr Porntip Rojanasunand?

The same woman who said that the GT200 bomb detectors worked without a shadow of a doubt?

I'm not sure if the two are guilty but I definitely wouldn't rely on her say-so.

The Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Mail, The BBC, the UK Embassy - Bangkok, and others have highlighted this story and other KT Death Island 'suspicious' deaths for years. And the 'Boycott Koh Tao' contingent on ThaiVisa has been at it for 4 years and the KT Pub Crawl is still packed.

So maybe some know nothing of KT other that one of their friends has told them what a great time they had on their visit. And -- given the demographic of those who spend time there -- I doubt many read much of the doom & gloom 'Death Island' warnings that are posted on here.

The youngsters come from.places that are far more violent. KT and Thailand in general are a haven of safety compared to London for example.  Knife crime, rape, murder,  acid burning,  gang rape,  public beatings...No go areas, people fearful to be on The streets after dark....The youngsters know the facts and the probabilities.  They are not stupid. Nor are they hysterical like the old fogies with their imbalanced advice.

And your portrayal of London is not husterical ? Would you care to present a per capita comparison of rapes and deaths of tourists between London and Koh Tao....no I thought not !

And would you care to compare the demographic of your average tourist visiting Buckingham Palace in London to the average tourist attending the Pub Crawl in Koh Tao?

So now the next big 4-year anniversary date will be the 26 DEC 2014 Koh Samui court hearing which entailed:

“Did you kill them or didn’t you kill them?” the judge asked at one point, according to Mr Hall.

“No, we didn’t,” the men replied.

The judge then urged the two men to reveal any information they had about the murders, Mr Hall added. “You don’t need to be scared. If you know who did it, tell us.”

The men replied that they had been drunk and did not have any information about the crimes.
