EC responsible for probing Thaksin’s alleged interference in Phue Thai: PM Prayut

Only the Election Commission can decide whether ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s influence on Pheu Thai Party is against the election law or not, said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

He was responding to questions over recent meetings between Thaksin and key figures of Phue Thai Party in Hong Kong.

“It’s a matter of appropriateness whether they should or should not go there and do that. But whether it is lawful or unlawful, it’s the EC’s duty [to investigate and decide on],” said Gen Prayut.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there were no applicants for the positions in the EC. Didn't the government nominate them in the end?

Have they been told of the outcome they have decided on yet?

Goodness gracious, I hope that you're not suggesting that they are anything other than an independent agency?

Shame on you!

The continued angst and looming threat regarding the Shinawatra gang.....

Square brackets are mainly used to enclose words added by someone other than the original writer or speaker, typically in order to clarify the situation.

So what is being implied by Prayut's statement with the brackets by someone other than Prayut is that Prayut is clarifying what EC's duty is. And that duty is open-ended and essentially whatever Prayut decides by making no direct clarification.

Appropriateness can be easily interpreted as unlawful and it's the EC's duty to the junta. They tried to do the same with the donations to FFP. Broad junta order with no explicit and left much to the EC's interpretation.

I see a disqualification of the party in the near future.

It is probably the only way that they can win the next election.

Which is the case, and always has been and probably always will be, for most laws. Very non explicit, plenty of room for interpretation, and the officer/committee/senior official has complete discretion on how they are interpreted for any case.

Nice - if you happen to be on the "right side'. And sides chop and change.

It's bound to happen. Thaksin owns and rules his party. Members openly flock to him for instruction. They ignore the new law; almost provoking their disqualification so they can claim any elections aren't legitimate as they were banned.

Maybe cunning old Thaksin knows he won't do so well at the polls and so this is Plan B?

Maybe the Junta knows that he will do very well at the polls beating the government party out of sight. Perhaps they want to ban the PTP for that reason.

Yeah, maybe. Or maybe he knows his private benefit party won't do as well as they pretend they will.

He deliberately provoking a ban.

Oh wise one. Please tell me which other democratic country has such party law on outside influence. That law was enacted because they fear Thaksin.

Prayut was in Buriram recently and standing next to BJT top leaders announced a 20B Baht development plan. Is that not influencing. He has been influencing the Sasomsab family and the Sam Mitr clique to support him. EC should also be investigating. No? Yeah no.

Is there or is there not a law that states who officials in a political party can or cannot speak to ?  Why do a bunch of appointed officials decide and not the courts ? The Thai government has the most bizarre and bewildering process on earth.  The lack of clarity and common sense is frightening.

Indeed, YB. It is very uniquely Thai.

And the most frightening aspect of the whole reflective charade is that it's has stood like this forever.

An historic bond that holds fast.

One would always prefer to select their lap dogs and the junta certainly did, and yes, the outcome has probably been communicated to that lap dog.

We'll call 'em all crooked scallawags and charlatans.

Easily fitting into the same boat. The difference is nominal.

Start anew with a fresh batch of ruling and classed criminals.

It is what it is.

A person would have to be the naive in the extreme to believe that the coming ' election ' is anything other than a forgone and fixed conclusion to rubber stamp an illegitimate government craving respectability.

There will be no surprises. Prayuth has carved himself a job for life and the populace will shrug its collective shoulders , take selfies , and wallow in facebook apathy.

Does it really matter who's running the show?

Life isn't that repressive, never has been.

Except for those who make up things for themselves.
