Is wood like this available in Chiang Mai?

Global does not have any wood like this.  I was there last week.  Most of the wood they had stacked against the far wall is gone.  They are down to strips of molding, plywood, and door frames.  The big box stores are no help.  The saw mills have wood much thicker than this and it is rough cut.  The places in Kamtiang Market making shelves and trays only have strips of wood, most of it 3 inches wide or less.  I was hoping someone could tell me where they put together the cheap furniture that looks like this...

If you want sawn 2x2 like your stool then go to suksawad. Theu are pretty much the only timber importer into Chiang mai for proper joinery timber.

They have large warehouses in the city and Doi Saket.

The only timber Global is good for is plywood, stramit boards and warped timber mouldings

Is it exactly those beer bar stools and tables you want?

If so, almost every 2nd hand junk yard has a dozen sets coming in on a daily basis when a bar business goes tits up...50bt stool, 150bt table

Actually, I'm looking for new wood that I can sand and use in art pieces. 1/4 inches thick, 8 inches wide, length? would be ideal.  I will try Suksawan.  I have bought some doors there, and walked around the place.  I don't remember seeing what I'm looking for.

You can order the sizes you want if you talk to them.  They have a large mill in Doi Saket where they can cut special sizes, make custom size doors, frames ...

Suksawad:  I just bought softwood 12mm x 2m planed for shelves @ 240 baht per piece.  Wood is very expensive here - A lot of the cheap bar furniture as pictured above is made from reclaimed pallets and there's a whole village near Lamphun that deals in that stuff, including raw materials.

Oi! Keep it quiet! We don't need the riff raff looking for scraps of wood coming down here.

OP, go to Baan Tawai. Loads of wood there.

near doi inthanon, a few km before the turnoff to the right going up, I used to buy at a few woodshops.
doors, windows, and they can make to order whatever you desire.

I assume you prefer hardwood anyway ?

Alternatively, in case you are into woodworking, get the rough cuts from a saw mill and buy a proper wood sawing table (about 7.000 B) and/or a planer to make clean cuts. Proper tools will come in handy anyway when making the angles joints for the items like you were showing in the picture.

Take a trip to Bantawai in Hang Dong, there are loads of wood carving / assembly places down on the road from Hang Dong - If you look out there are a load of Export / Packaging companies down there too that will use cheaper woods for crating etc. The wood looks like Mai Makah (sorry the spelling may be wrong) but it is usually a very cheap wood that is cut from very fast growing trees - ( you often see it overloaded in Chiang Mai pick ups- similar to Lam Yai but much bigger blocks) It is useless for construction and useless for anything outdoors.

Pity you don't live near to Korat because I know lots of places down here. There ought to be places, usually situated next to busy roads that sell cheap wooden furniture. Many of those places use wood from pallets to make their furniture but usually you can buy bundles of wood from deconstructed pallets and it may be close to what you are looking for. Also I recently found a lumber yard down here that deals almost exclusively in wood from rubber trees. The wood is used in making furniture amongst other things and they guy I now know will cut the wood to any dimension I want. I am about to start experimenting with rubber wood in the making of bodies for the electric guitars I make. It is cheap and sustainable. Maybe you can find a place like that up there. Alternatively you could drive an empty truck down here and I will get you what you want.

Good quality there.

I went there once on my bike, it was quite apparent that I didnt fit their desired customer profile and were not interested in my order.

Its one of those places whose head is up its own arse....probably some  farang owns it.

I wouldnt send anyone there even if I did want them to get screwed.

Went there on the scoot for a small piece to replace a termite damaged cabinet door post in the kitchen.  Ended up with a used but good 3 foot hardwood piece.  Couldn't have been more helpful.

I think you may be wrong about this one eye-catcher.  I have done business with them and they provided good service and high quality for a variety of home construction needs.  At least they did about 10 years ago.  Not farang owned.

Yes I have probably been too harsh as I am more used to the reclaimed timber outlets. I am just a pleb.

Theres a new teak flooring shop on the main Ban Tawai road, near the two entrance roads, should anyone wish to give it a coat of looking at.

That looks s if they are usin a lot of sapwood from a variety of hardwood.

Virtually every wood wood yard will have all the wood rough cut, they will have thicknessers that will bring the boards down to the dimensions you want you just pay a per meter charge.

The only light wood easily and widely available here is rubber wood.
