Video: One dead as Thai pensioner drives straight out of the showroom into barrier in Udon Thani

CCTV from a Toyota dealership in Udon Thani on Wednesday showed a Yaris drive straight out into oncoming traffic and collide head on with the barrier in the middle of the road. 

 

At the wheel was 75 year old Sangwian Mukkhunthot who survived but is in a critical condition in Udon Thani Hospital. 

 

His 75 year old wife Janlun in the passenger seat was unconscious when medics arrived and gave her CPR. She died in hospital. 

 

The accident occurred after the couple visited the dealership on Nityo Road and were leaving after completing some unspecified business. 

 

Pol Lt (female) Nareumon Kuaseuku investigating said that it appeared that the driver had come down the steep ramp from the showroom and mistaken the accelerator for the brake. 

 

She will be interviewing him again when he has recovered sufficiently from his injuries, reported Daily News.

Maybe getting brakes checked !,no attempt to brake at all,

As a young UK bobby, the first lesson you learn when dealing with collisions is "Preserve the scene". You don't want one incident turning into two. Seems they don't teach that here, not surprised.

It seem many drivers start first and somehow in the first couple of hundred meters, while driving, they try to manage the seatbelt - not only in Thailand. And then they look at their phone and maybe start programming the SatNav, etc.

For whatever reason it seems to be human behavior to do all those things when they are driving on the street already.

Any crash where the airbag deploys is serious. An airbag just assists in reducing the trauma of the accident whilst causing a degree of abrasion itself. It deploys at 200mph and only minimises the impact with non yielding surfaces. Airbags don't prevent death just give a better chance of surviving if you are wearing a seat belt.

 

The passenger was 75 so possibly frail, also she didn't die in the crash but after it.

Airbags are only designed to assist in an accident, they cannot save you from everything...

again if she failed to put on her safety belt odds are she rattled around inside hitting everything.

Also aged 75 your body is frail & bones are brittle, injuries sustained can be severe, shock also is a killer in these instances.
From the video it indeed looks like he accelerated out from the showroom and panicked at the slope, possibly hitting the accelerator again or both brake/accelerator by mistake.

I have to say I find the headline misleading. It seams the car was driven out from a "dealership" not a "showroom". The difference being, the headline implies a newly purchased car, which it was not. If it were, it would be doubly sensational. No doubt that was the intention of the writer.

 

From the tone of some posts, many readers been mislead into believing it was a new purchase.

You don’t get smacked in the face by the airbag if wearing a seatbelt. 

Put it on next time old lady....oh....there won’t be a next time...

If your face smacks the air bag or the air bag smacks you face makes very little difference.

 

In an accident where the airbag fires your face will hit the airbag, wearing a seat belt will not stop that.

 

Both the seatbelt and airbag reduce your forward speed more slowly  in an accident. Neither stops you being killed both reduce the chances of death.

 

Nothing in the report states that either the driver or his wife did not have their seatbelt fastened. There is no mention of the seatbelt in the report.

 

I have great sympathy for both the driver who lost his wife and his wife who tragically died in the accident. 

 

Unless you know for sure that they did not have seat belts on you are jumping to conclusions, and in any event your comments are petty and mean spirited and reflect on your character.
