Netflix Quick to File Complaint With New Thai Anti-Piracy Agency

Netflix has become one of the first companies to file a copyright complaint with a newly-formed anti-piracy agency in Thailand.

Launched just yesterday, COPTICS is a partnership between Thai police and the country's Intellectual Property Department, which will aim to quickly block pirate sites, a process that currently takes months.

Compared to many other companies in the video industry, Netflix traditionally had a fairly pragmatic approach to the piracy phenomenon.

Now, however, with billions of dollars being spent creating its own content, the company is a major player in the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), a global anti-piracy coalition with considerable influence.

According to a March 2018 report, by 2020 the company will have more than 546,000 customers in Thailand. However, piracy is rampant in the country, something that has led to its placement on the USTR’s Priority and regular Watch Lists in recent years.

Netflix offers about 12% of it's US content in Thailand. And they wonder why there is piracy? I would be thrilled to pay the monthly fee, if I could get US content. Get your act together guys, and do the licensing deals required to offer us a decent package. Otherwise, shut up, and deal with it.

Netflix doesn't understand.  The anti-piracy laws are there to stop foreigners pirating Thai things, not the other way round.
