Poly Water Tanks

Featured Replies

What a load of nonsense has been posted about poly/plastic water tanks by persons who really have no idea at all.  Here in Australia, and believe me we do have sunshine, there are thousands of long lasting water tanks, i had 2x3000 ltr tanks installed 8 years ago and they are just as good as when i bought them. They stand in the hot Queensland sun (37 cel this week) and the water is just perfect. Here, there is an amazing range of water tanks to be found  of all sizes unlike those "piddling" little things that are available in Thailand where  they really have no choice or idea what a decent water tank even looks like.

Maybe just one sentence at the start of your post to justify all that nonsense you wrote would maybe help start a discussion?

You lost the whole forum as soon as you posted, but I am persevering with you because I do have extensive construction knowledge and would love to debate all this nonsense

Don't need them here much in Thailand . Pretty good mains supply.

Don't you get water mains in Australia ? Do you get grid power or do you use diesel generators or solar power ?

maybe they sell these ummm... 'things' in LOS?

Poly tanks in Australia are not the same quality as poly tanks in Thailand.

Maybe, just maybe, you could quote some of the "nonsense" to which you refer.

At least then the perpetrators could defend themselves.

It's also worth noting that, oddly enough, this is not Australia, the same size and quality of anything isn't necessarily readily available.

Ah, nonsensical subjects.  This is destined to be at least a 10 page thread.

It looks like it may not make it past page 1.

Ah, nonsensical subjects.  This is destined to be at least a 10 page thread.

But this thread has it all !!

Suspense !! will the OP get an answer to his vaguer than vague question ?

Mystery !! what exactly is the thread about ?

Thrills !! who will be the first poster to tell the OP to go home ??

Action !! will it come to blows and a suspension ??

These threads are great to subscribe to and watch the action from a distance, but don’t get too excited and actually join in the confusion !!

That said, we bought two 2,400L (the biggest available from stock) "Jumbo Granite" tanks back in 2012, both are still as new apart from the labels fading in the sun.

There ya go !  some fool said that these tanks only last 2 years and that stainless steel is the way to go. Another reckons that with the tank standing the sun, the water will deteriorate.

There are some really (really, really) cheap blue plastic tanks that aren't opaque to UV allowing green stuff to grow inside, the longevity of these tanks is also suspect from UV exposure.

Stainless tanks have their own issues with pinhole corrosion due to contamination by grinding sparks, it only takes one spark to land on the surface to get rust started.

I am not sure what series of what brand the OP is unhappy with. The major brands of water tanks sold in Thailand are on offer in many price ranges, materials, thickness, brass or plastic fittings, green PPR pipe inside or Blue PVC pipe outside, ground mounted or underground water storage. I've owned "plastic" water tanks of a good grade from DOS | SAFE | Diamond Tank since 2005.  None have failed. Most for rain water storage, one for well water storage and three water tanks to store municipal water.  The steel reinforced concrete pad to place a ground mounted water tank has proven helpful for me in Buriram. The "really cheap" blue or green water tanks might not be lined inside. There are however some series of blue water storage lined tanks sold in every province in Thailand that prevent algae. I suggest the OP tip any water tank to look inside for lining. The brochures list the wall thickness. I would never recommend a third or fourth outlet being added to an already manufactured water tank. If you need an extra outlet placed on a water tank I recommend a special order when they first fabricate the tank, not AFTER it is molded. The OP might consider buying his water tank at a shop in his province that provides better grade water tanks to resorts and hospitals.

Galvanized steel water tanks like this used to be the standard in Thailand and indeed they were the pits - rusting out quickly.  The blue plastic quickly took over but they had the internal fungus growth issue as well as aging plastic - the alternative was SS tanks which were and are a great improvement.  But now poly tanks that block sun are available and seem to be very good.

i just  bought  a  poly  tank ,   along  with  stainless steel tank from big C.

These ones last 10 years guaranteed....so keep the receipt and claim a new one if broken within 10 years.

But 10 years isn't that much, i bet the stainless steel tanks last longer, ours is 10 years and still fine.

Does anyone know where to buy an original Australian large steel water tanks like pictured below... I’d like to make one into a swimming pool...

Yes there's a lot of fake and low quality stainless steel in thailand...once i bought a stainless table in IKEA and put some potted plants on it to see rust the next day...i called them to return it and pick it up at my place to refund me, which they did.

Last week i asked for 316 stainless in a steel shop but they had never heard of it.

It generally isn't fake, that is just not worth doing. Mostly it's poor construction that causes water tanks to leak and a lack of knowledge by both buyers and sellers that stainless steel has many different alloys some of which will rust specially if you have iron in any water that sits on the surface.

I'm not surprised at steel shop not knowing of the different alloys of SS as it's a rather specialised business.

That may be true in beach areas but here in Bangkok have never had SS tank rust through (only at top cover hinge rivet) and been using same tank since galvanized steel days.

It's usually nothing to do with beach areas as they rust from inside, it's the poor construction that uses grinding to deposit  corrosion points and poor welding technique. Many tanks are well built but some, not so much
